First concern is reliability. I had a GI Springfield Armory, early 80's variant, that ran well, after I'd sent it in. On Springfield's dime, to their credit. I just didn't trust it after that, and I really wasn't impressed with the fit and finish. Eventually sold it. I has very pleased, however, with Springfield's customer service.

Looking to get another 1911. I'm going to avoid the RIA, Taurus, and bottom end SA pistols. Looking to spend about $800. (Any more than that and I'll just save for a Dan Wesson.)

What brands should I look at? I don't care about the external extractor, either way. Ie. it won't be a deal killer. Don't need ambi safety, front slide serrations, checkering, etc. Such features would be nice to have, but not essential. Novak sights and a beavertail would be excellent. NOT a big fan of big obnoxious roll marks. Just want a full or commander sized pistol that works. I'll look at custom/semi custom when I pay some more bills off.

Sig? Ruger? S&W? Colt? Kimber? Give SA another try? Find a nice Norinco?

I thought, mistakenly, that I could pick up their entry model used for the price of a dan wesson. ie. like 1200-1500. Right now I just want something to shoot.

I'd go back and get another SA GI or grade up to a Mil spec.  My SA GI was the most dependable, accurate out of the box gun I've owned with perfect slide frame fit and park job.
With a flat MSH, plain wood grips, STI poly trigger and NM sights it was as handsome dead serious gun I owned.

Wow. That's the place then. If I'm spending Les Baer coin, I'm getting a stainless commanche, and I'm getting it there.

Ok, here's what I have it down to:

Springfield Armory Loaded
Ruger SR1911
S&W E (base model)
SIG XO or XTM

I really am liking the look of the SIG. I heard of QC issues in initial production, but supposedly their pistols have been less finicky as of late. Can anyone comment from experience?

Sigs older 1911 models had some issues. The current production Sig 1911s are not in the same class. The current Sigs are some of the best bang for the buck 1911s in my opinion. You just have to get past the slide shape and extractor. Read some of the posts by people who own them. Very few complaints from owners. Non owners love to bash them but most of these people have never shot one.

Get an SA Loaded. I have a couple and they are great. They might not be quite as accurate as a Les Baer but I don't shoot good enough to tell the difference.

I have a ruger SR1911 and SA TRP to me they both are nice but for the price difference I would get the ruger, both shoot the same. SA loaded would be second choice.

Envious I see.

I would probably go with the SA Loaded or a Ruger 1911 if you can find one. The Ruger 1911 is the better choice in my opinion since it has series 70 internals. The lines on the Sig 1911s look ugly. They try to take the looks of a P226 slide and put it on a 1911.

Do yourself a favor and get what you want to begin with..
If you are talking about an $800 budget..  save another $300 and get a DW Heritage..

I have a variety of 1911's..  everything from a couple of cheap beaters..   ( rock island and springfield GI )    and to honest i have had great luck with them..
I have 2 Kimbers.   a custom II with night sights and a  Tactical Pro.  both have performed very well and i use them all the time..    the custom II is my single stack competition gun
A colt combat commander..     pretty good luck with this..  few issues here and there..
and
I have 3 Dan wessons..   a  Valor, a CBOB, and  a guardian 45..

I would rather give up a kidney than my DW's..    they really are that nice    and none of the above mentioned pistolas compare to the fit and finish..
Matter of fact.. I am thinking of getting rid of one my other pistols to help fund a new DW Guardian in 9mm..

I cant tell you how nice they are and how a few months of going without is really worth getting what you want..   the wait is worth it if you need to hold off..
I have had buyers remorse too many times ..   settling for something..   i refuse to go down that path again..

patience my friend..   get what you want..  and like someone else says..  buy once cry once..
The DW heritage is the exact same gun internally as a Valor..  just doesnt have some of the nicer finishes..  duty coat, night sights, checkered front strap..
It is still a 1911 that deserves the DW label and in my opinion heads and shoulders above the rest..

get your paws on some if there is anyway you can..
have fun
shoot , shoot more.. and then shoot some more..

be safe

That's a matter of taste, but for those who don't care for it SIG also makes a "traditional" line of 1911 pistols now as well.

when i went to the range i shot a variety of 1911's that were the lower entry models, the springer felt loose and sloppy which is how the gi 1911's were suppose to be i'm told but i just didn't like the feel of the gun in comparison to the kimber custom i shot right afterwards. it was more accurate, had a better fit/finish and just seemed to be a better gun. my buddy who was there test firing them with me agreed with my opinion.

I ended up going with a tact cust since i wanted night sights and a few other goodies, but the custom was what i set out to initially get and it was right around 800 bucks.

Don't compare an entry model of one manufacturer with a middle or upper level of another. It's not a real comparison.
I have an SA Loaded and an SA Match Target that I use in competition. Both are tight and very accurate. In comparison my Colt GCNM is loose but is still accurate.
Accuracy in a 1911 comes from a tight bushing to barrel, bushing to slide and barrel to slide lockup. A slightly loose frame to slide fit doesn't affect accuracy much but usually makes it a little more reliable.

Pics? Who's making them for them? Kahr?

ETA: Another SA GI or Norinco, or one of these if they are an improved product for around $500 would be nice until I can save for a TacOps or Dan Wesson.

Kahr has owned AO for a while now.  From what I've heard they improved the overall quality of AO quite a bit.
I have an old AO 1911a1 (my first handgun... Got it in trade for an old beater motorcycle) it was reliable with ball in stock form.  I keep it around for sentimental reasons and have modified it heavily... It is reliable with all ammo now, but I would look elsewhere first for a 1911 to stick in my holster.

OP it sounds like youre just wanting to waste your money. You will just end up 4 or 5 hundred bucks further from what you want if you go with a budget range pistol.

But if you insist just about any of them are made in the Philippines, at the same plant. So that should make it a lot easier to pick. I mean an ATI is a RIA, so on and so on.

I sold a Remington Enhanced to a guy the other day, it was the first one I have handled and I was impressed. Fit and finish appeared good and it comes with a few bells and whistles like a beavertail grip safety. I have not shot any of the Remingtons, but we have not had any complaints. If I remember correctly the price was just under $900.

These pistols make great bases for carry guns.  I pretty much always keep an eye out for them in the local shops.
They can be a bargain if located for under 500$.
