I tend to purchase quality rather than quantity.  For example I chose Colt AR's even though I believe I could have gotten others that were 98% as good for 20% less money.  I'm now thinking about getting my fist 1911.  My heart wants a Wilson Combat CQB or Ed Brown Special Forces, but they are pushing a little beyond the limits of what I can spend so if I did go that route I would be hoping to find some lightly used examples.  I'm also interested in the Springfield TRP based upon everything I have seen and heard about it.  Keep in mind, I haven't got to shoot, handle, or see any of the above in person and unlikely going to be able to.  Any purchases will almost certainly be made site unseen.

I fully expect the Wilson and Ed Brown to be better pieces but they don't cost 20% more like the Colt, they are nearly 100% more than the TRP.  I do not carry every day, when I do it will be more likely my Ruger LCR.  I just starting shooting in some IDPA's and I would like to use a 1911 for those competitions.  While I don't have any plans to carry the 1911 daily, if I ever did I want a gun that I can have full confidence in it's ability to function under any circumstance.

Like most people, my funds are limited.  The $800-$1000 I could possibly save going with the TRP over a semi-custom could really be used to get some much needed accessories for guns.  However, if the semi-custom are really that much better then I would rather get the quality piece.  I guess part of me has a hard time justifying $2500 on a handgun when I'm not someone that carries it as a duty piece.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

I went through the same thing about 5 years ago and ended up with a Les Baer Premier II

It seemed to be the best value in a 1911 at the time.

Go take a look at STI GUNS
Very fine weapons for a decent value.
Yes the TRP is nice I have one and I also have a STI trojan which i feel is just as nice! Trojan also comes in 9mm which is what i use for IDPA. something to think about!
I also have a SIG TACOPS which is pretty dam close to the quality/accuracy of the TRP.

I would second the suggestion to check out Les Baer options.  I think the Premier II and the Thunder Ranch Special are a nice step above the TRP, but still not as expensive as your other options.

Picked up a lnib LB TRS for $1400. Same money as a new SA TRP. Wait and find a safe queen Baer.

I used to own a TRP. For what they are costing now I would go with a Les Baer Custom Carry all day long over it. I paid 1250 OTD for my TRP, now they run like 1400 pretax or so. A Custom Carry is around 1650. I think its a no brainer, you get every thing that makes a Brown or Wilson quality for a lot less money.

No one has a better bargain in 1911s right now than Les Baer.

i believe in saving a little longer and getting semi-custom. I had to wait 3 years but it was worth it.

You could also look at the Colts; they've made up for their mistakes of the past and have a very nice line again.

I second the STI Trojan.

I'll second this. I have a valor and have compared it side by side to a TRP, which I think it easily beats (especially when you compare the quality of the parts) and I feel it is on par with Baer and perhaps others. It runs flawlessly, has a tighter slide to frame fit that a Baer (the Barrel isn't hard fit though) and has parts as good as any gun out there.

If I were you, I'd strongly suggest picking up a used TRP and a good holster / belt, etc.    Shoot the TRP for a year until you're ready to upgrade (if ever), and you should be able to get 90% of your money back out of it.   You will also have a better idea of what you like in a semi-custom.

If that were true of the 99% of the Baers out there you would not be able to cycle your Valor. Im not saying that its a good thing in a Baer, especially for guys that arent willing to invest the time and money it costs to put a case of ammo through it. Just that Baer is about as tight as you can possible make a 1911 and still have hopes of it being cycled.

ETA I think Ken is on to something, if you really like the TRP buy used. Most all of them are bought by people who baby them and you could save a few bills.

I have looked into a number of the ones recommended in this thread, some I didn't.  Any input on how the SA TRP stacks up against the likes of Ed Browns and Wilsons?  Durability, accuracy, finish, etc?

I have looked into many that were suggested above.  I had previously wrote off Les Baer's because of how tight they are supposed to be.  I long feared that would work against it with reliability.  I looked at them again and I do find the Les Baer Custom Carry to be a beautiful piece.  I believe they are blued which makes me wonder how they are with corrosion and wear resistance when compared to the paints/epoxys/ or other finished found on guns like the TRP.  Also, I found a thread that suggested the factory sights are pretty bad.

I been seeing a lot of recommendations for the Dan Wesson's on this board but I assumed they were built oversea's since they are affiliated with CZ.  After finding out differently I'm wanting to learn more about them.  The only thing I would like to see added is the mag well funnel.

I appreciate all the feedback so far.

Im going with my small samples of one each, a TRP and a Brown Executive Elite. Both were reliable, if the TRP shot a 2.5" group the Brown was 2". The Brown has a triggger no one can do better than, and the Brown is cleaned up better, smoother etc.

They are tight, but after about 500rds they just smooth out, trigger and slide etc. And the accuracy seems to actually get better as it breaks in. As far as the finish, its blued and wears and protects as well as any other blued finish out there. When it comes to sights on the Custom Carry, I dont know what could be bad about them. THey are the Champions Novak knock offs with Trijicon tubes and the silver metal outlines. I know some people prefer white.

Dan Wesson is a name and a shop that was owned by Bob Serva, he sold the shop and the name to CZ and started Fusion
I appreciate all the feedback so far.

It isn't the slide to frame fit that makes a Bear hard to cycle, it is the barrel lock up. I don't think anything locks up tighter than a Baer in that regard.

I was recently in the same dilema I researched and looked high and low. I had my options down to the STI Lawman & Trojan, TRP, and the Sig Tac Ops.  In the end after finaly getting my hands on all three and allot of reading I landed on the TRP.  It was very close between that and the Sig, the STI is a great gun and worth the money but with some companies really stepping up there Q&A you would be suprised.  The Sig was definitly the most bang for the buck and I was about to settle on it when I couldnt find a TRP in my price range.  As i was driving back home after looking at a beat up used sig I was about to swallow the pill and go purchase the Sig new.  About 20mins out I got a email back from a TRP I had wanted but wasnt fast enough orignally to snatch up.  Turns out the guy ahead of me backed out, it was a sign from above.  I paid 1150 for my TRP operator and I couldnt be happier.  There is a reason that most people rave about them, for the price they are very hard to beat and as it was said before should you ever choose to sell it you will recoup 90-95% out of it.  In the past two months in my area there has been 4 come up for sale none over 1250 two stainless and two in gunkote, only one was an operator.  If your wait they will pop up and are worth it.  The STI was a great gun as well I just didnt like that allot of features both of the other guns offered that  STI did not and were a few hundered dollars less, plus the finish on the STI was lacking and left allot to be desired compared to the other two pistols.  Anyway hope that helps good luck in the end I am sure you will be happy with whatever you choose.
