I decided to get back into 1911's after not owning one for a while.  I wanted one for CCW, one woods gun and apparently one to keep the other 2 company, so I ended up with a Dan Wesson CCO, Sig TacPac and a Sig Scorpion.  The CCO for CCW is a no brainer after I get my practice in.  I had the idea that one of the Sigs would be converted to 460 Rowland or possibly even 45 Super to carry into the woods here in CO in lion and bear country. I fish regularly in an area that has the highest concentration of lions in the state, even though I have not encountered one, thank God.

I fear the Rowland will be too cumbersome and am unsure if I should find a fully supported 1911 for 45 Super.  I tend to carry a bit of gear when I fish, including a backpack and/or fanny pack depending on overnight stays, weather, etc.   Now I am thinking that maybe I should get into 10mm instead, even though I was hoping to stick to just one handgun bullet diameter.  It seems like it may be more practical, even if I have to get a 10mm Glock.  A commander 10mm may be a good candidate, but I am not finding too much info. on that configuration.  My experience with 1911's is still limited at this point considering I have not owned one since the late 90's and I need to re-familiarize myself.  Any practical advice someone can throw out at me?

When I got my first 1911 'way back in the mid-1980s, I found an excellent manual called Hallock's 45 Auto Handbook

It's currently out of print but used copies are available for somewhat of a premium.

With that book I was able to take a WWII-era Ithica 1911 and make it into an absolutely reliable shooter. (I already have some rudimentary mechanical skills.)

I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to tinker with their 1911, or just to know what's "under the hood."

10mm Commanders are going to be nearly nonexistent outside the custom 1911 sphere.   I can't think of any current production 10mms in Commander size.   Your best bet will be to pick up something like an STI Ranger II ($1000 or so) in  .40 and have the barrel reamed out to 10mm, or try to pick up a Dan Wesson on the auction sites.

i have a v16(45 super)and it's a longslide and can shoot 45acp w/a spring change. i also have a g20(10mm), 15 + 1, soft recoil considering, 4.5 inch barrel.
COSteve swears by the g20, as do many others in your area!

My "woods gun" is a Delta Elite.  In the woods I'm going to be open carrying so no real need for a commander or smaller.

Dan Wesson makes a nice 10mm, buy one of those.
