Say I like a classic gov model thumb safety and would like one just like that, but on both sides. What Am I looking for? Who makes it? Is it any good?

Brownell's has one.
Can't remember who makes it, but as a lefty I notice those things and it looked nice.

Mueschke makes that safety. While it looks exactly like a Colt safety, like I'd like, it has a lot of mixed reviews.

Pass on the Mueschke.

This.

King's 201A would be my ambi of choice (if I could find one). As it stands, I found that I was knocking my Kimber Desert Warrior's  thumb safety off during the business day enough, that I went to a single left side only. The problem ceased.

I've never had a problem manipulating this style of safety, with either hand.

I've since standardized 4 of my 1911's to all have that same trigger, thumb and grip safety.

I feel a duty pistol should probably have an ambi safety. I see people recommending "Kings." Are they in business? I can bring them up with google, but it doesn't look to me if you can order anything from them.

Maybe I should do what most do and get  Wilson parts..

King's is out of business, for all practical discussions. Kimber makes a good clone of their design, but it is MIM, and I have had one break on me.

What kind of holster are you using, or going to use? Will it cover the right side safety lever?
FWIW, I am using a DeSantis Scorpion IWB:

... and for all of its good qualities, using a 1911 with an ambi safety, in it, wasn't entirely compatible. I don't know of any similar holsters that would be able to prevent that, until you get into the Safariland ALS level III type holsters.

Well the intention for this pistol is a duty gun, and the plan was a Safariland holster for it actually

Actually who's safety is SIG using on their Scorpion model? That would work swell for me.

My guess: Sig uses their own. Theirs looks like another clone of the King's pattern, which is a good thing. Frankly, I'd run it with the factory part. If it breaks, Sig will fix it under warranty:

"...This limited warranty is null and void if the firearm has been misused, damaged (by accident or otherwise), fired with handloaded, reloaded or improper ammunition, fired with an obstruction in the barrel, damaged through failure to provide reasonable and necessary maintenance as described in the manual accompanying the firearm, or if unauthorized repair or any alteration, including of a cosmetic nature, has been performed on the firearm. This limited warranty does not apply to normal wear and tear of any parts...."

If you put in an aftermarket thumb safety, the grip safety may need to replaced or altered to work with the thumb safety, which pushes you into not being covered under the Sig warranty.

Being a lefty myself, I've always found Ed Brown Ambi Safeties to work very well.

I am left handed and I have the mueschke non extended in all four of my 1911's.   I love them, they are exactly what I like.  I prefer the way the right side is held with a pin instead of with the grip panel.   Three of them have been absolutely perfect. The fourth one, also the most recent purchased, didn't seem quite as nicely finished, but it still functions. fine.   I endorse them, regardless of what others here say.

Yep, that's the Mueschke. And like the last one I bought, the finish isn't that good.  However the other three i have purchased have had good finishes.

Well looking at the Sig it doesn't appear I can just buy their safety, and they don't seem to offer any of their pistols with a SS one like it is on the Scorpion anyway. My Colt is SS, so that is out.

Screw it, I'll try that Mueschke ambi once, buy it in stainless, and see what happens. I like the GI style of it. I just hate these long extended ones. Your forced to use a high thumb grip other wise you bump the safety on, Then everything seems to bump the safety off while carrying. There will be plenty of time to give it a good thrashing to see if it is something that is going to work out for me. Looks like I could even have Crimson Trace grips if I so wanted to. That is nice

I have decided, Thanks for the help...

I went with a Colt ambi safety which isn't as large compared to the others on the market. I also looked at Mueschke but was turned off by the lackluster reviews.

Here's the Colt. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/511441/colt-extended-thumb-safety-1911-ambidextrous-matte-blue

I like Wilsons Bullet Proof ambi, but they also have two different non bullet proof models.
