Ive probably shot less than 250 rds out of my 1911...I only have two mags, the stock mag, and a cheap "GI" mag i picked up at the gunshop....everyonce in awhile I get a FTF...its been awhile and i didnt really try and diagnose it so I cant say for sure if it happened with only one mag or not....

ALL ammo ive shot has been reloaded ammo from a reputable gunshop/indoor shooting range. What happens is when a particular round tries to chamber, the front of the case/shell gets caught up on the top of my barrel chamber? sorry dont know the correct terminology...and peels the brass back a bit, off the bullet and is unuseable....

anyone ever experienced this before? what could cause it?

thanks

is the ammo lead or jacketed ball? Can you share pics of the jam/gun?

Its jacketed,...always been FMJ...never have shot hollows or anything else. Im going to shoot it tom. if it ends up jamming i will take a picture and post it once i return.

start with the magazine and determine with which mag the failures occur and go from there....a significant number of issues can be resolved with magazines...

Does the problem occur with a specific magazine an/or does it happen at random or on a specific round, i.e. FTF 3rd to last round? There's a good chance it is just bad magazines. Checkmate, Chip McCormick and Wilson all make very good magazines.

try a different load, slide may not be getting pushed back correctly with less than full power loads..  reloads were underpowered.

If it has shock buffer in it remove it
lips of magazine may be out of spec - try different magazine

This sounds like an ammo problem.  It sounds like there is no crimp on the brass.  Try some NEW ammo and see if you have the same problem.  Then, if you have the same problem, try the magazines, shock buffer, etc.

You're short some information for solutions.

Here's what I want to assume. The one stock magazine is a working hybrid. Meaning its made to feed ball and swc.

So with assumption in mind. I'm gonna go with an ammunition issue.

Just because someone says they know how to reload doesn't mean much.

There's press operators and there's handle pullers.

What's important to know is two numbers.

One is cartridge oal and bullet type.

Two is loaded case mouth diameter. Measurement at top of brass, opposite case rim. Should be between .469 to.471.

What I think I'm hearing is an occasional out of spec cartridge. Measuring entire box is a good thing or simply take your barrel out and case gage each cartridge using barrel chamber. Should drop in and out. I'm suspect your club is using assorted brass. This presents a problem, different brands have varying case wall thickness.

when issues occur it is always wise to step back and diagnose by A) using a mgazine of know quality- even if it means borrowing a magazine from a friend -honestly just buy a couple  KNOWN good quality mags- like wilson chip mccormick or les baer. you need more than two anyway. one variable eliminated.B) use factory ammo- another variable eliminated
c) make sure pistol is lubricated
if you do all the above and have malfunctions then try to diagnose the problem. i'd bet there's a 95% chance after you eliminate questionable ammo and mags that everything will run fine

"Known Quality" doesn't mean as much as  "known timing." For instance Tripp Cobra is timed to release cartridge later than Wilson 47d. Wilson ETM falls between the two. Choice of magazine depends a lot on cartridge oal and bullet shape.  Having  these 3 magazines covers feed ability much better than just one make. Differences are evident when compared side by side.

I know what you mean 1911 smith, realistically most people are not going to go out and buy one of each of three different mags- our points though are the same a good quality mag is needed for a baseline assessment- your idea of one example of several brands is a good idea since there are variable as you point out. gun show parts box bargain mags are not the place to start, and we all know unfortunately magazines that come with factory guns are often lacking in quality as well.

Sounds like the bell wasn't removed from the case after the ammo was loaded.  I had an issue with that with some of my handloads.  I had to turn my crimp die in just a little to remove the bell, after that I didn't have any issues.
