I have a Springfield 1911a1 GI and I'm considering a barrel swap. I was looking at some different options, and on the Wilson Combat website, and they offer both the bushingless and bushing barrel in the full size.

Can you swap from a bushing to a bushingless barrel without other modifications to the slide? What are the advantages of each?

Thanks in advance

Yes, you can.

One less part and more mass up front with a bull barrel.

If hood lock up is good, you can gain more potential out of your current set up with a barrel bushing swap. Get out  your mic and and place the order with EGW.

ETA
you will need the no feed ramp bull barrel.

If you do decide to get a bull barrel, the slide will need to be modified for a reverse plug and you'll need a full length guide rod.

The question is, what are you looking to get out of this change? What's wrong with the original barrel?

To be honest I'm not sure I have any goals other than learning and accuracy. Nothing is wrong with the barrel now... But if I have a better option, why not?

I have a Springfield 1911A1 Mil-Spec in stainless. As I understand the GI and Mil-Spec models are the same gun except the MilSpec has a few added features.  Far as the barrels I'm thinking they are the same. I also have another 1911A1, a Norinco with Wilson barrel, barrel link and bushing. This Wilson barrel is a 'D' or Drop in type . Although it is a drop in it did require some fitting but not modification which was done at Wilson. This barrel and bushing is significantly tighter than the stock MilSpec barrel & bushing and requires a bushing wrench to remove. Other than that I don't notice any difference in accuracy which may be due to my personal ability or lack thereof.
Given the quality of Springfield 1911 barrels and the attention S/A pays to the fitment of critical areas I wouldn't spend the $190 on a  new barrel. Do spend the $200 but spend it elsewhere like better sights, maybe a trigger job and beaver tail GS.
At any rate, enjoy it.
