I lent my Clawson book to someone who has yet to return it, so hopefully someone here can help.
A couple months ago, a guy brought in a Ithaca SN:2657837.   Only problem was, the "265" were obviously hand stamped after the fact.  I told the guy no thanks.
Last week, another guy came and was talking about 1911s, and told he he had a Ithaca 1911, and the first 3 numbers of the SN were hand stamped.  I didnt ask where he got the gun, if it was possibly the same?  Anyhow, anyone hear of Ithaca doing that during production?

That's a good Ithica 1911A1 number close to the end of their last run. Maybe they were using 2 dies at the time? Did the area look scrubbed and restamped? I have seen a couple 1911s that didn't have nice lined up numbers but were correct.

I know the sn is in the correct range, is it correct that the first  3 digits were hand stamped individually, all sloppy and crooked, and the rest of the digits were machine stamped?

sonofabitch, the pic I took was still in my phone...
Looks like a felony to me at first glance.

Was it by chance a rebuild and a restamp because the original serial numbers were faint? It really does look like the same numbers were restruck.

my guess is also restruck after a rebuild obliterated the original numbers
