Springfield loaded lightweight bi-tone $859 , Kimber Custom Classic $899 ,  Colt xse lightweight  $979 , Remington R1 $659 or Ruger sr 1911  $550 ( 5 week wait only thing wrong with this one) Guess I will keep looking , all at diffrent shops.

Springfield makes some pretty solid 1911s in that range.

The Loaded models are nice, and I've heard good things about the new Range Officer.

Options:

A. Spend 600-1000 and it's a crap shoot. Might run like a top out of the box and might be a nightmare.

B. Spend 2K + and it will almost definately run like a top out of the box. Maybe.

Personally, I'm done with them.

Unless of course you really like working on pistols and you have three hands.

I suggest the Range Officer. You can't go wrong.

used loaded from springfield

new STI spartan

new range officer as mentioned above.

possibly new ruger 1911.

could go cheaper, RIA tactical.

if you don't like it, no real loss on re-sale, good customer service, so if it doesn't work out of the box, they will make it right.

If you shot your friend DW and liked it, look for a used Valor or Heritage

The advantage held by Springfield is that their warranty is essentially unlimited and they even pay the postage both ways if there's an issue.  The warranty even applies to used pistols (unmodified) if going used is an option.  There are plenty of Springfields worth considering, the Mil-Spec being a basic 1911 for around
$650, and the Range Officer a range and target model for $800ish. There's some merit to the opinion that a sub-$1000 1911 can be a little tempermental (most are just fine), but the Springfield warranty should eliminate any concern.

OP, 90% of 1911 issues can be fixed with good mags, either Chip McCormick or Wilson or Metalform, a Wolf recoil spring, and a short break in period. You're going to by mags anyway so why not by good ones. You're going to shoot it, so that's a no brainer. The recoil spring is anywhere from $6 to $12. Any model listed above should be fine.

Don't forget Tripp.

I've really liked the Tripp mags I've tried.

Having owned Springfield, Colt, S&W and SIG over the past ten years, I say you should take a long, hard look at SIG's offerings. If holster commonality is a big issue, take a look at the SIG traditional models.

Right now, SIG gives you more for your dollar, like Novak night sights, 25 LPI front strap, beavertail grip safety, extended or partially extended thumb safety (depending on production date), beveled slide cut (unlike the sharpened Colt), forged frame and slide, completely American made pedigree and only 2 (two) MIM parts for less than $900.

If the nostalgia of the Colt name is important to you, then go for it. They are putting out great 1911s right now, it's just that SIG is giving you more for your dollar. S&W seems to be charging you more for less. Springfield Loaded is always a good choice, but they are full of MIM parts, made in Brazil (by a decent company), and are now priced very close to the SIG offerings.

I'm not a SIG fanboy, in fact the company's offerings are pretty lackluster nowadays...except for their 1911s. You owe it to yourself to at least look at one.

Agreed, and if you want some work done on it, their Custom Shop is damned good, too.

My two SA Custom Shop guns.

Thanks for the suggestions ! I'm going around tomorrow to the local shops to take a look. Hope I find some of these in the same shop to compare. May be posting PICs of my frist 1911.

I paid a bit under a grand for my Sig TacOps with every bell and whistle imaginable and it runs 100%. I've fondled it and a Nighthawk with three times the price tag and the only thing it didn't have was the shiny metal.

I love 1911s.  Springfield is my brand.  But, I recently bought a Metro Arms for $425.  It works perfectly and looks great.  I posted a review recently.

I shoot bullseye, so 1911s are a mainstay.

All that I can offer from first hand experience is that COLT and Springfield Armory are both producing excellent 1911s these days. I have never used COLT warranty service so I cannot comment on it. I used Springfield warranty service back in 1996 and it was excellent. It was for a new M1A that was going full auto. The problem was taken care of quickly. A friend of mine bought a new SOCOM 16 that would not produce acceptable accuracy. SA repaired it quickly also and it is now a good shooter.

I own or have owned 8 SA 1911s and I have had nothing but excellent performance from all of them.

I have other 1911s with which I am very satisfied. But, if I purchase more 1911s, they will be new COLTs or Springfields.

Springfield Range Officer, perfect for your price range.  Otherwise a Loaded would be great too.

SA's have a good reputation -again made wholly or in part overseas (a foreign made 1911 just seems wrong to me and won't have one)
the fact so many people comment about SA customer service tells me something- if I had a good running gun I'd never need to know hoe good the cs is. Lots of comments mean lots of returns!?
I'm not much for Kimber the Dan wessons seem good based on what I have read and ssen-but you are looking at 1k anyway.
for 500 bucks more get a used les baer and start off at the top of a known design instead of the grey zone middle of the road.
