Looks to me to be 23, SA Loaded needs a 28 - on the way from Midway.  I may have a 25.  Think it'll make a big difference - in that the slide won't lock open?

I don't, but I'm a noob

Factory guns will be either 21 or 23 lbs depending on the manufacturer and when it was made.  (most are 23 these days)

If the Springfield has the ILS system it will have a much shorter and stronger spring.  My preference is to throw out the ILS mainspring housing, and replace it with a normal one with a 19-20 lb mainspring.

If the slide won't lock open it has absolutely nothing to do with the mainspring.

Tossed the ILS already

Grip safety (on another 1911) has me, but I think I have that figured out . . .

Thanks

If you got rid of the ILS you should not be using a 25# or 28# mainspring.  That is ridiculously heavy for a 1911.  23# is the standard.  Some custom manufacturers will opt for a 19# spring and use a slightly heavier recoil spring to offset the reduced mainspring weight.

23# mainspring + 16# (17# is also popular) recoil spring is the standard.  19# mainspring + 17# or 18.5# recoil spring is also pretty common.

Thanks, these two 1911s are giving me a real run for my money.  Freakin grip safety on a Kimber CDP has me baffled.

Just took a break from assembly.

Well back to it.  Wish me luck.

I use a 19 mainspring and a 14 recoil, for my reloads at 173 PF.

Gave up on the Kimber for the night and replaced the ILS MSH, springs on the SA Loaded.  Cycles by hand great.  I found a significan # of mags with shot springs.

I'll post a thread on replacement spring questions in the troubleshooting forum
