I've got several handguns based on the 1911 Colt platform - Gold Cups (2), a Delta Elite in 10mm, and several Service Model Aces - all perform flawlessly.  The Colt Combat Commander (stainless steel) has given me fits since its purchase three years ago.  Have shot the thing 800 - 900 times with an assorted amount of factory ammo and reloads.  I have changed main springs, magazines, and used it with or without buffers.  (Gun works best with blued, 8 round Chip McCormick magazines).  Gun has been repeatedly detailed cleaned and sparingly lubed but am still experiencing hood jams on the first two or three cartridges.  All jams are easliy cleared by simply pulling the slide back a quarter inch and letting it go forward.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Can anyone recommend a good pistolsmith?  It's a great-looking gun and functions fine the last five rounds so I am not going to part with it at this time.  I look forward to the learned types that frequest this forum.  TIA

That is a strange issue you are having. I think you are right on track with having a good smith look at it. I have worked with Ned Christiansen (Michiguns) and John Harrison (Harrison Customs) and both are top flight smiths as well as great guys. I would also suggest having whatever smith you go with tune 3-5 magazines for the pistol. I use Cobra mags from Trip Research and Wilson 47Ds.

Good luck, at least you have several other 1911s to shoot while you have your Combat Commander tuned up. I recently picked up the same pistol in stainless. It will be next in line for a trip to one of the two smiths listed above..

Did you buy it new?

Has it had any other modifications?

How many magazines has it had this issue with?

Matt, thanks for the smith referrals.  Vortec, I bought the gun slightly used, no modifcations.  Gun came with a magazine marked Colt with Rampant pony but what I suspect is fake.  I've tried several Chip McCormick mags, both blued and stainless, but problems persist.  The latter are damn good magazines and work flawlessly in the Colt Gold Cups and far fewer jams are encountered in connection with the Commander when these mags are used.  Maybe they need to be "tuned" to the gun.  I have several ..22 Colt Match Targets and these guns definitely need their magazined hand fitted/tuned to the gun.

Do you know the weight rating of the recoil spring?

Can you reproduce the problem with factory ammo?

What is the bullet profile and COAL of the reloads?

Also, check the inside lug of your slide stop for wear marks that might indicate rubbing.

Lastly, a photo of the feed ramp area would be helpful.

Have you checked the tension of your extractor? Since the problem occurs with several mags that sounds like the most likely suspect.
