I currently do not own a 1911 but I'm looking to get back in to the market. My local gun shop just got a Dan Wesson Point Man 9 in and it is a beautiful pistol! So does anyone know about this pistol? How is the accuracy, durability and reliability? It is pretty pricey at $1,500!!! In general how are the 9mm 1911's? Is this something I should consider getting only in .45?

9mm 1911s can be considerably more finicky than the .45 models.  This usually means finding the right combination of bullet profiles (if you reload) and magazines.

As far as that particular gun, I really would have to be in love with it to pay that much for a Dan Wesson.

Ok screw it! I have had zero luck getting a 1911 that can make it through a mag without a malfunction(2 Springfield's, 2 Kimbers and 1 Les Baer) so if the 9mm 1911's are even less reliable this is not the 1911 for me. I really want a good 1911 that will be trouble free and I'm not giving up on finding one yet.

So Dan Wesson 1911's are not all that great for their asking price?

You have 3 1911s and none of them run right? I think at least one of those manufacturers would warranty their weapons. Are you using the same mags, ammo, in all of them?

That's semi-custom money (Valor, LB) and a Pointman just isn't worth that kind of scratch.

Over the past 15 years I have had 5 1911's and had awefull luck with all of them. I did send back a couple of them under warranty but they came back and quickly started to jam again. I sent another to a 1911 smith and it came back working better but still would jam a few times per 100 rounds which I feel is unacceptable. I sold them all but still feel the need to have a sold and reliable 1911. Maybe I'll try the new Ruger??? Those Dan Wessons feel so nice though but $1,500 is a lot to gamble on.

Go here http://forums.1911forum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=52  and read up on DW 1911's.  I have a Valor and it can't be beat for the $.

Do you do all your own handloading?  If you're having that many problems with that many guns, it seems that it would be something other than the guns.  Not saying your ef'ing something up but just curious.  I've had 5, 2 springers, they loved everything except real long stuff; 2 RockIsland, anything and everything they ate up; and one Remington Rand, AKA the "baby rattle," that thing loves everything.

I have the Dan Wesson Pointman 9. I have had it since Christmas '09. It has a custom trigger, I think done by the Dan Wesson custom shop. It was a gift so I don't remember who did the trigger. Sent it back once to get it adjusted. No problems since.

I consider one adjustment acceptable.

I have slowed down on my range time but prior to moving here in December I took that particular gun to the range every time, at least once a week, with a minimum of 50 rounds shot each trip So conservative estimate would be 2600 rounds over that time. (No wonder I am broke)

Absolutely love that gun. It is insanely accurate and a joy to shoot.

Good luck with your decision.

I don't reload and I mostly shoot factory ammo from Wal-Mart and I never have any problems with the ammo in all my pistols. I have shot several 1911's that are flawless but just had bad luck with the ones I bought.

Did you have any malfunctions?

After 400 rounds (about) I had some failure to feed issues. That is what I sent it back in for on warranty. They couldn't get it to reproduce the problem there but did some adjustments.

Keep in mind these problems started happening when I was shooting outside at below freezing temps with some raining/sleeting. Before I sent it in I bought some aftermarket mags and tore down/cleaned/oiled it with no change to the problem.

Whatever they did (a slide adjustment of some sort... clearance comes to mind) corrected it. I have had no problems since then. Even when I was having those problems it still shot accurately when it shot.

YMMV
