I picked up a used Springfield Mil-spec recently. It is modified somewhat with a new trigger, new hammer, beavertail, and speed bump safety. It still has the factory mil-spec sites.

I test fired it from a rest at 25 yards and aiming at 6 o'clock at an 8 inch target, I get a nice 2.5-3 inch group at the 12 o'clock position of the target (so 6-8 inches high).

This is using my first 45acp reloads: (Hornady XTP 230gr bullets, 4.2, 4.5 and 4.7 gr of Titegroup, mixed brass and OAL 1.23. The 4.7gr loads grouped the best, but all shoot high). I've been waiting for some 230gr round nose FMJ bullets from Precision and will test some commercial loads (230gr PMC FMJ) this weekend.

I think I got a good deal, I like the trigger and how it shoots, but I'd prefer the POA to the the POI.

Questions:
–– Should I try lighter/heavier bullets? or will that be unlikely to compensate?

–– If not, should I file down the Mil-spec rear site?

––If I do and ruin it, is there an adjustable rear site (like the range officer has) that will fit the Mil-spec dove tail? or is a different site the way to go (Novaks)?

Thanks

In order too move yor bullet point of impact down you will need a taller front sight. Not file it down.  Also you may want to run some factory 230 grain ball through it to "test" your point of impact vs your reloads.

if the fron t sight is dovetailed in you'll need to replace with a HIGHER front sight

Yep, I had suggested filing down the rear site or replacing it with an adjustable site. The font site is not dovetailed.

Don't know if anyone has filed down a rear site?

And if there is an adjustable rear site that fits into the existing dovetail on a mil spec.

But for sure I will shoot some other rounds as well.

Thanks

Doesn't sound high to me, sounds dead on.

The Range Officer has a BoMar style rear sight on it, that requires a pretty involved dovetail to fit. But they are nice sights.

I'd be tempted to put Novaks on it, myself. My old Loaded has those and I'm pretty partial to them.

Back up 25 yards and you'll be good

Thanks all.

I guess what I was thinking was something like the LPU TPU adjustable site, but I don't think I like how it hangs off the back of the slide so much:

LPA TPU site

I do want it to be point of aim = point of impact (its shooting at least 4 inches high even if you prefer 6 o'clock aiming).

If I can't find a 230gr reload that will shoot pretty close to that I'll probably spring for Novak cuts and an adjustable site set up.

Or, of course, practice the 25 yrd retreat and fire drill

That's kinda the ghetto installation. A BoMar BMCS can be installed flush with the back and top of the slide, but it involves more milling than just making a flat and a dovetail.

Right, that one is meant to be a no-milling upgrade.
But I agree –– ghetto to be hanging off the back like that.

I couldn't find a nice looking adjustable that would slide into the factory dovetail without milling.
If I going to pay for milling I have Novak cuts put in.
