My father took a Consealed carry course with me over the weekend, he brought his kimber. We only shot 100 rounds.  During that time he had 3 major malfunctions.  All 3 being double feeds on a live round.  The kimber has probably around 1000 to 1500 rounds through it so it's broke in, and we religiously use Wilson combat mags.   We do usually shoot  reloads and that day it was Winchester white box      It did function fine before but it has sat for over a year with maybe 20 rounds through it.

I'm thinking mag related.  But I don't know.
It was cleaned and oiled well before use.

Any tips or hints?
Thanks in advanced.

Need more info about the failures to help...

Though, using a Target gun for Concealed carry may be a problem anyway.

Yup, need a better description of the failure.

No doubt a target model wouldn't be good to carry Consealed.  He just used it for the class.   I think he is thinking about a officers model, maybe a kimber ultra, but I'm trying to convince him to go with Springfield.

The malfunction occurs on the 4 or 5 shot in a mag.  It will feed one in the chamber and another live round will be stoping the slide from locking forward.   The primer of the 2nd round is looking up at me out of the slide.

In theory I'm thinking the mag is letting 2 rounds up at the same time, but is that possible?

Ahh, I see.  The gun is fine.

I would bet it is a worn out mag (feed lips) and/or mag spring.

Could also be a worn out recoil spring decreasing the slide velocity.

Easy fixes all around.  Try new mags, then, if that doesn't solve it get a new recoil spring.

I can't even imagine why any 1911 under the sun would fail to feed 230 gr ball ammo....

See above.  It doesn't matter what the ammo is, if the mag is bad or the springs are bad, it'll fail.

You'll need to isolate the problem magazine and inspect it or remove it from service.

Clean and de-grease the magazines.  I'll bet that there's some residual oil in the mags, which is letting the top round squirt out under recoil, before the slide picks up the next round.

How may rounds total through the gun?

How many rounds through the mags? This could be the mags but you would need a whole lot of rounds through them to weaken the springs or wear out the feed lips or mess up the follower, etc...

This sounds like a recoil issue, specifically too much.  You can test this pretty easily.  Load two rounds (only two) into any mag, insert the mag with slide locked back, drop the slide with the slide stop (do not slingshot it).  Now, remove the mag.  Does the round in the mag pop out?  Is the round partially unseated from the feed Lips?  Next step.  Unload the gun and load three rounds only, slide locked back, insert mag, drop slide using slide stop.  Fire 1 round, remove the mag.  Does the round pop out?  Is the round partially unseated from the feed lips?  Is there a dramatic difference from the unseated round in the first test?  If in the round two tests the round popped out or is dramatically unseated from the feed lips you need to replace your recoil spring and I would recommended your firing pin spring as well (its just good to have a quality firing pin spring but not required).

Buy a new wolff spring, test 50 rounds with the same mags loaded from 3-8 rounds per mag, see if the problem persists but I doubt it will.  PM me if you need other info (you can experiment with over and under powered springs to adjust the function of the firearm and I can address that in more detail for you).

I was talking the problem over with my father and he added that 3 or 4 years ago he dropped it off to novaks and ther replaced the spring and rod,  and a few other reliability things.   The gun and mags have less than 1000 rounds through them.   I'm going to have to get the pistol for closer inspection.       I will try that one tesT m4grysbr posted    Thanks.
