I'm looking for a pistol with an Officers frame and a Commander Slide. Other than the Springfield Armory Compact, who else makes on in the $700 or less range?
Is it possible to build one, will the frame and slide match up or does it need a gunsmith? Thanks

It's possible, but you will probably have to build your own.

As you can see, there is a bit of a gap between the slide and frame forward lip.

Colt made some. I had one 12 or so years ago, new. They do seem to be rare but probably could be found. I am sorry I do not remember the 'name' of that gun.
They also made some the other way round.

TALO is releasing a Colt version sometime this year but it will not be in the $700 range. It will probably be around $1200 or more.

I believe Kimber just came out with that combo.

Kimber has the Compact CDP II, which is around $1100, and also for a lower price gun, the Compact Stainless II, although I'm not sure what the price is running on that one. .  I don't have any experience with either one, so can't comment any further.  I have a Springfield Ultra Compact, (officer's frame with 3 1/2" barrel) that has been great so far. I've only had it a couple of months, and have put around 500 rounds through it without any problems.  My next 1911 purchase, which is the officer/commander setup,  will be the Dan Wesson CCO, which runs around $1400 depending on where you find it.

in the 700 range, I was thinking of picking up the RIA, citidel or which ever comes in a 4.25 inch slide commander and the officers and just fitting the commander slide to the officer frame.

Looks like it can be done right at 400 per gun new. if you shop around used, you might pull it off at 700.

If by just came out with, you mean 10+ years ago then yes.  I've found the compacts hard to find though.

I put a complete Colt 1991 Commander upper on a complete Lwt Officer's frame. There was no fitting or gunsmithing necessary, just assemble and shoot.
Standard weight Wolff springs all around. It functions without a hitch with ball, 200gr cast SWC and 230gr Gold Dots.
I like it much better than either the Commander or Officer's ACP.

This combo is one of two that I want to acquire/build this year. I need to shoot an officer frame pistol first though. I am ham handed and an officer frame may not fit me very well.

The Rock Island Compact is almost commander length with a 3.5" barrel.  They can be had for around $450 and can be sent to Arnel in Vegas to be tuned for HP rounds.  So far I like mine quite a bit.  It will be going out soon for sights.

Pic of the Compact and my 1991 Commander below it.

Call me crazy but 3.5" isn't almost 4.25" when you are dealing with 1911-style pistols.

I tried to swap the slide from the 1991 Commander on to the Compact fame and it was a no go.  The specs are just a hair different.

As far as the 3.5" being close to  the 4.25" commander, you're right, it's not.  They are fairly consistent in weight and recoil though, and the 3.5" does conceal much easier.
