I've been looking into getting one of these for my first 1911, but I can't seem to find them for sale anywhere. Also what are your thoughts on these? As I understand they are basically just like the original 1911a1 govt. model because they don't have the series 80 firing pin and they dont have the collet barrel bushing.

Not exactly 'just like' the M1911A1 but essentially the same 'form, fit and function'. You're right about the lack of the 'Series 80' firing pin safety and original Series 70 'collet' bushing (Accurizer). You can find NIB and 'like new' original MK IV Series 70s for about the price of the new reproduction. Actually, this 'formula' of the 1911 is widely available from $400 on up if you don't have to have a Colt, and there are plenty of them in Parkerized finish that look very much like the M1911A1. The original Series 70 as well as the repro are mostly blued, with polished flats and matte rounds, which is the classic Government Model style. At various times they had blued or nickeled triggers, hammers with 'in-the-white' sides and several different kinds of grips. The originals are only collectible at this time in absolutely new condition with the box and papers, so if you got a good buy on a slightly used one and wanted to do some updating/customizing on it you wouldn't be sacrificing a rare gun. It's hard to do better than a good old Colt for your first '1911'.
As for the repros, I understand that Colt's makes guns in batches, alternating among all the various models in the current catalogue, so you find different models available at different times.

if you do a lot of reading about the original 70 series vs the repro 70 series you will find there are lots of guys that own or have owned both and are of the opinion the current repros are as good if not better quality than the originals.

if i had the extra cash i would probably buy the repro in the EE

I'd love to get that one in the ee, unfortunately my state requires me to get a permit prior to purchasing any pistol. I should have it in about a month. Anyway it looks like I'll just have to watch gun broker and on the forums for a nice one.

I just came home with one I had on layaway about an hour ago. Got it for $725 (and no sales tax here!) and it appears unfired other than the factory testing. It was sold as a used gun but I don't see any use on/in it. I'm happy :)
This one has the rubber wrap around grips but those will go and be replaced by standard wood Colt grips.
Here's a few poor quality quick shots of it as I sit here at my computer desk fondling it.
