I'm not a 1911 guy, so pardon the dumb question.  Should the safety levers ever move independent of each other?  Logically, it doesn't make sense that they should not move simultaneously.

This is what I am seeing::

if left and right levers are down, then the hammer falls
if left lever is down and right lever is up, then the hammer falls
if left lever is up and right is down, then the hammer does not fall
if left lever and right levers are up, the hammer does not fall

Thanks.

No, the safety levers should not be moving independently.

It sounds like the right lever is not attached to the left lever properly.

Yep.

I would recommend going with the Wilson Combat bullet proof if staying with a ambi safety.

Holy Mother of God!  That's almost half as much as the pistol cost.  I appreciate the suggestion, but I don't like the ambidextrous safety.  If it is in fact broken, I will call RIA and see if they can send me a standard safety.

Pretty disappointing, really, as I've only had 100 rounds through it.

Call them, they will send you a new replacement but I would ask for a call tag and let them fix it. I say that because they will also go over the whole gun and you will get it back better than it left.

Quality costs. I would not use that part either on a RIA.
