What could have changed?

Because even so called "drop in" parts are often not "drop in" and often need to be fitted. The other possibility is your replacement slide stop is out of spec and not being engaged by the magazine follower.

1911's aren't like AR's.  They don't have "mil-spec" tolerances to use, and you really need to know what you are doing to change parts and have them run correctly.

Did it work before?

If yes then the problem is your new slide stop.
If no then the problem could be your magazines.

Thats because it's design is not to release the slide. Slingshot that baby like it was meant to be....or use your weak hand thumb.

since you put a longer one in, your thumbs are probably preventing the slide stop from engaging.
Also note, its a slide stop and not a slide release.

The 1911 patent issue to Browning refers to it as both, and points out the serration on the top making release easier.
