Anyone know any DVD's or books to read for a noob who wants to build his own 1911?
Also, any slide/frame recomendations? |

Find a good Smith and have him build one for you. Brownells has lots of DIY info for you, but if you don't know what you're doing or not good with tools or all things mechanical, you will find out it's harder than what you believe. And expensive. $$$$$$$ All the jigs and little tools add up quick. |

1911s do not go together like AR-15s.
Actual removal of metal to fit parts is required. The 1911 was designed at a time when labor (even relatively skilled labor) was not that expensive. As a mass production design a working gun could be assembled form barrels of parts, and if a particular combination of parts did not work one was changed out and then things were GTG. If all the parts are actually to the full up government drawings the odds are it will go together and work. Very few are, and folks have been demanding better fit. |

Yes, this was the case years ago when all you could find was old surplus parts. Assembling a working 1911 from those parts was trivial compared to the state of things today. The majority of new 1911 parts today are made oversized in order to be custom fit to tighter tolerances than the old surplus stuff. The fitting is where the real work of putting together a modern 1911 is done. It's still possible, with a lot of parts shopping, to put together a gun that's not far from GI spec, but chances are it'll rattle like pebbles in a can, look like crap, and exhibit mediocre accuracy. A 1911 worth having is going to involve a lot of hand work. |
