This is my MIL's gun, FIL died. I'm sorting through his guns and he had this. Any help appreciated, I'm sorting through the Luger posts now, good reading. Thanks guys.

I believe that protrusion on the rear is for mounting the butt stock to make it a carbine using a large (30/40 rounds) capacity magazine. Some of the original holsters were wood and mounted as a butt stock. neat stuff. Something looks off with this gun. The barrel serial number looks too highly polished. You can still see a faint halo around the serial
number. The other pics of the gun look pretty normal finish color and texture though. The 9 on the grip was a miscommunication to the armorers to mark guns formerly chambered in .30 Mauser as 9mm so no one blew their gun up. This is what it looks like with the stock attached. 
Oh and you need one of these as well.
