I took my wife out shooting for Mother's Day. She has been shooting a Glock19 for a while and recently took a liking to a Glock26 over her SW36 snubby. That said, she has very small hands and low hand strength. When she wraps her hand around the Glock, she has to rotate her hand forward causing the backstrap to line up with the second knuckle on her thumb (instead of sitting in the "web" of her hand). This causes the gun and her hand to be out of alignment with her wrist and arm. Combine this with low hand strength and it is not only painful for her to shoot, but she looses her strength quickly. I started researching some ideas on a different gun for her. My first step was to have her hold one of my 1911's. I found the grip fits her hand much better, so the search is on. Talking with her about this, I don't think she is ready, willing or able to carry a gun c-n-l. Now I'm trying to find a good single stack gun (like the 1911) that uses a LIGHT DAO trigger (like the LDA). My concern with the LDA is trigger reach. Can someone give me an idea if the LDA trigger is about the same distance as a long trigger on a typical 1911 -- or is it longer? Thanks |

Longer than a standard 1911 trigger, but on the same note, the longer is a lot of light take up until you get to the meat of the matter. Chances are if she has small hands, look into a ladies sized S&W. They have both revolvers and auto sized just right for smaller womans hands. |

She has a model 36 with CTC laser grip. She's pretty accurate with it, but shooting double action is tough for her -- the trigger pull is relatively heavy and tires her hand quickly. She can cock the hammer if need be, but doesn't like to. I think the DA trigger pull on a 3913 would still be a bit heavy, though it would only be a single pull before the s/a pull. That said, she doesn't care for a TDA trigger with the two stages (DA followed by SA) or a decocker. She wants something that is DAO, with a light trigger pull. Combine this with a small grip and it is difficult to find a gun as such. Options that I have seen include the Para LDA and the Sig P239DAK. The grip on the HK with LEM is too big. Any others I'm missing? |

if she likes the glock, get a grip reduction. my wife has the same issues as yours. she can shoot the glock pretty well but definately needs the grip reduction. it's cheaper than buying another gun, the down side is, the good grip reductions are taking about 3-4 months to get back to you. so you will be without your gun for that time. |
| I had considered the grip reduct on the G19, but I am concerned that it will not solve the problem. Before I was allowed to carry a 1911 on duty, I carried a G21. I didn't mind the big grip but was curious about the reduct. I never pulled the trigger on having one done and was able to carry a 1911 by then anyway, so it was a mute point. However, while I have not tried a "small frame" Glock with the reduct, a couple friends of mine have had the "large frame" Glocks (20 and 21) with the reduct. I personally did not notice a big difference. I wish there was a way to "try before you buy" as I agree...if the reduct would work, it sure would save a lot of hassle. |
