I currently own a 9mm XD Tact and really like it, but I'm looking to add another pistol to my collection within the next year. I'm pretty much sold on having a 40SW as I don't like the .45 round (I've shot it and just don't really like it, I prefer the 9mm and .40SW).
Currently I want another pistol for a few reasons, one I would prefer to have a .40SW for home defense, I want a backup pistol for when I got to handgun training, and I want another caliber pistol. What I'm looking for is a highly reliable pistol that can take a lot of rounds through it. I'm not interested in 1911 style (those only come in .45 right?). The main options I've been looking at so far are the FNH FNX-40, some version of a glock, or the H&K USP, or maybe a sig?

I'm also in the market for a small CCW that I could conceal in shoulder holster (but this is a ways off as I have to move to a different state first).

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the matter.

you can get a 1911 in almost any cal. from 9mm to 10mm to even .357mag.

Yeah after I wrote this I was looking at galleryofguns.com and saw that they did have some 1911s in 40sw. In any case I don't really like the style of 1911... Don't hate me please!  :)  Just not a big fan.

Sig P229 in .40 is a pretty nice shooter. It's my favorite after my 1911s

I have heard lots of nice things about the Sigs. Definitely a option. Though a little more on the expensive side it looks like.

Find a range that has rentals and try as many different makes of pistol in 40 as you can.

Buy the one you shoot the best.

The .40 S&W is a very "snappy" cartridge in recoil, and different pistols transmit the "felt" recoil to individual shooters in many different ways, depending on your physical make up.

I have an FNP 40 that works well and has been 100%, so I will extrapolate that it's new cousin, the FNX 40 will be one to consider. ( I also have an FNX 9 and it is a very good shooter, but 9 and 40 are very different).

I would recommend trying a S&W 3rd gen. 4006s are relatively cheap and available.

If you can find a used pre-rail Sig P229, buy it.  Unless you just have to have a rail.  Used Sigs aren't that expensive, usually in the $500 to $600 range.

P2000 .40 or a P30S .40, can't go wrong with either.  JMHO.

I'd say Glock 22/23, HK USP, FNX, and Sig 229/226 in that order (if buying new, a pre-2005 used Sig would be ahead of the FNX for me)

Take a look at the Smith & Wesson full size M&P .40.

Mine, which I shoot weekly,  has been my daily carry for the past 2 + years and has been exemplary; accurate and a soft shooter too.

Absolutely 0 issues with it.

+1 on the Sig P229.  My first handgun (had it for 17 years) and still love it.

The Glock 23 .40 would be a good choice in my opinion.
