What are a persons options for changing a 1911's sights from a GI rear cut to something like a Novak or Heinie? Can it be done? Does anyone have pics of the end result?
I'm looking to put a set of Heinie ledge sights on a SA mil-spec.

If you have a mill, any option is possible.

I know this. I would have it sent off for new sight cuts anyway.
What I'm wondering is will new sight cuts result in a messed up slide? does anyone have a picture of a GI to Novak sight conversion?

You can do what I did; ship your slide off to Novak's; they'll mill your slide perfectly and install whatever Novak sights you desire.  They did a great job with my gun.  And, no, properly done, the slide won't be damaged in the process.

Excluding the price of the sights you were getting installed how much did this run you?
(Novaks sight only lists sight prices and shipping fees not the install price for milling)

thanks for the info. Did you have the GI sight cuts to start?
Also, how much did Novak charge?

Says this one fits in a GI dovetail, and they will install it for $35.  Might need new front sight as well

Regular Novaks require dovetails to be cut front and rear and costs $115 for milling, plus the cost of whatever sights you choose (plus shipping too)

About 200 bucks including sights. They charge $115 for the milling.

It's actually easier to mill a GI sight for a Novak than it is to start with a blank slide.   The instructions Novak includes assume you already have a rear GI sight dovetail.

This is the cut I prefer; there are more aftermarket sight options for it than the Heinie cut.
