I'm picking up my new S&W 500 this weekend and I need some ideals on scopes. The Leupold  4x FXII is what I'm leaning towards what do y'all think?

leupold is the one I would go with but I would go with a base's with 3 rings.

What is the max distance you expect to shoot?
How much weight is acceptable?

I have a Burris variable and a Leupold 2x8 on different Contender barrels (223 and 7-30 Waters respectively).
The Leupold 2x8 is my first pick for any handgun shooting under 200 yards. It is clear, durable and the eye relief is flexable.
The Burris is better for over 200 yards because of its higher magnification but it is bigger, heavier, and the eye relief is not as forgiving.
I also have an older 4x Leupold that has survived 44 mag for years but I really prefer the variable power.

I like your choice for a wheelgun; for the XP's, T/C's etc I like the variables.

Using a Weaver 4x on my 460.  If I had to do it again, Id go variable.

At what range do you expect to use the gun?

Around here in the dense woods, I use a Burris 1.25-4 on my Ruger Super Blackhawk.
I've had good luck with the T/C Contender 2.5-7 lit reticule scope on my .454 Redhawk.
The same Contender scope has been used on 45/70 Contender as well.

I have a 2X Leupold on a FA .454. That is more than adequate out to 150 yds.

When I initially bought it, I tried a friends 4X.  The higher power is a liability, it takes a rock steady hand or a rest to use at distance.  The eye relief is more critical and unforgiving at the higher magnification.

If you can, try both the 2X and 4X at a funstore.  In terms of a mounts, I use the TSOB 3 ring mount, made by SSK industry.  For a .500 that's the route I would go.

I have a Burris on my .44mag and it has held up well.
