My little brother is looking for his first handgun and found a XD45GAP in the 4" Service model. I know little to nothing about the 45 GAP other tan that its a odd caliber. Price was $315 with 2 10rd mags and the gun was clean.
Is ammo around for these things? Any problems as far as kabooms? More info on the caliber would be great. Any help is appreciated. Im trying to make him swing another $75 or so for a XD9/G19/M&P 9/etc. This is a pretty cheap pistol but the odd size has me worried. |
| I like the concept - makes more sense than a .45ACP for a carry gun, and easy enough to reload for if you want to shoot it a lot. The price sounds good too. Of course, if it is a shooter and reloading is not an option, then the extra $75 of the 9mm will pay back quickly in cheaper ammo. |

Though the caliber is an oddball, I find that it's usually stocked at least in small quantities in all my local funshops. Even if it weren't, he can get it from a place like Midway for cheaper than most gunshops sell it anyway. Performance-wise, it works just fine. However, I would try to talk him into 9mm, 40, or 45 ACP with a preference towards the M&P or Glock. If he's set on a 45 caliber bore, the M&P45 compact is almost exactly the same size as a G19 and will work fine as a carry gun if that's what he's wanting it for. |
| I have the tactical 45 GAP and I like it alot. I also have a 45 ACP as well. I reload so it makes it alot easier for me and I always have ammo on hand. I only baught the 45GAP because it came out before the ACP did. If I had it to do over or could only buy 1 gun, I would go with a 40 or 45 ACP. |
| I had one, and it was very dependable. I sold it because it didn't offer me anything that my various .45 ACP's don't do. If the pistol had been downsized to match the shorter cartridge, it would have been different. If he's just gonna shoot it once in awhile, and otherwise leave it in the nightstand, than it would be an ok deal. It's a solid, functional firearm. |
| There is a reason it was so cheap, nobody wants them. The GAP was a solution for Glock to get away from their brick sized 45acp grips. Then the XD came out with a slimmer 45acp, then Glock with a slimmer 45acp and now the GAP is all but dead. I think it might fit well in a sub-compact 45 caliber gun so the grip could be alittle smaller for carry but thats about it, however I see nobody making such a pistol. |

Im trying to make him swing another $75 or so for a XD9/G19/M&P 9/etc. T 1) Yes ammo is available. Ammo is either supper cheap or super expensive depending on how desperate a place is to get it off their shelves. 2) No, it's fine, the GAP is loaded to 23,000 PSI, same as .45acp +P 3) It was invented by Glock so they could get their name on a caliber and so they could put a .451 hole in a 9mm/40S&W sized package. I've seen these .45 GAP XDs before. Usually the shop has them really cheap because it's a weird caliber and nobody want's it. If I could get one really super cheap I'd do it, and reload for it. (carefully) Otherwise your initial instinct is the right one, and he should get an XD9 or M&P 9 instead. |

I would buy that pistol described in a heart beat. They are great guns in a good caliber. The gap is easy to find online. There are 4 or 5 state Police agencies issuing the 45gap. I think it will be around for a while. PM me where it's for sale I might get it myself if he passes. Thats if funds allow |

It is just like .357 SIG... there is another caliber that has a broader range of ammo selection (as well as guns chambered in it), so the pricing can never compete in the long run.
I personally never liked the loss of capacity with GAP guns. The Glock goes from a 13 round ACP magazine to a 10 round GAP... and Springfield lost an additional round. For an officer, going with an ACP gun gives you about an extra magazine per the same load as a GAP gun (loaded gun, two spare magazines). With so many agencies that have gone with 9mm or .40 guns, if you want that frame size, just get it in one of those calibers. The GAP, with its shorter cartridge length, would be nicer in a single stack sub compact. Pocket gun like that would be the only way I'd look at the caliber... |
