Springfield "Mil-Spec" 1911, no question in my mind.  Its not exactly "small" as you requested, but its the best $500 you can spend for a NIB pistol.

If I remember correctly you can get a Colt 1991 in that price range.  That would be the way I would go.  They are a great looking pistol, also I never had any problems with the one I had.  I have also seen quality control issues with other pistols in this price range that the manufacture either refused to fix under warrinty or gave the owner greif about getting it fixed.

Smith & Wesson in 10MM.  Probably a 1066 or 1026 model.

Good strong pistol frame.  I really like the S&W autos (though I know many who don't) - I like to get odd ball things also.

I would spend $600 and get $200 Walther P22 or Ruger MK2, $200 screw on silencer, $200 tax for said silencer.

1911 probably, definately NOT Springfield or Colt....

I agree with the 1911's and not Springfield, but I disagree with the Colts. All my Colts have worked well right from the box and all have had real nice triggers. Along with my SIG's and HK's, the Colts are the only guns I havent had to send back for anything. I have a couple of older Springfields that fall in this group too, but their QC of late has been pretty bad.

+1 for the Colt 1991.  Or give it to me, I'll add a little more and get another HK.

Maximum firearms for the dollar!

Actually there is a nice little used H&K compact .45 at my FFL going for under $500 right now that I would get.

+1... Or a Model, 17, or 22, or 23, or 26, or 27, or 32.  That's all depending on caliber I feel necessary to fit my needs and size consideration for mode of carry.

No I don't have problem with sigs, but I do believe in the phrase "Glock Perfection"

I've seen NIB .40S&W Browning hi-powers go for $450. I've seen used ones under $400. Buy a used one and a coupla extra mags and some ammo, and for $500 you have a dead-reliable pistol with a SA trigger that has good sights and can be carried cocked/locked.

CZ 75 SA - Well made, ambi controls, cheap ammo, good trigger, very reliable. $399 all day so you have money left over for Wally World 9mm @ $10 a box.

Sig definitely. I also own a glock 22 and a kimber 1911 so ive seen the other side of the fence. Its a matter of taste. You have to love the glocks simplicity and eas of field stripping. The 1911 is a blast to shoot. The sig is a nice combination of each.
