If you want a rail, get a modern pistol. If God had wanted the 1911 to have a rail, he would have commanded John Browning to invent it. I don't get it. I'm not trying to start an argument, but how can the same person that holds the 1911 so high on the ladder of guns not like it because of a tactical addition? I'm not hammering you for the record, just trying to understand. I like the 1911, but for a combat pistol I would be looking at a polymer framed version with no grip safety. If the OP wants a 1911 with a rail for a tactical reason that's fine. I can dig that, but to say no 1911 shouyld have rails because Mr. Browning didn't design it that way is sort of
That being said I love shooting the 1911. Some day I will own one. They are a great gun. YMMV ETA: Sorry for the slight hi-jack OP |

Owned both, but don't have either anymore. My vote is for the Operator. The M&P had nice recoil, but that was about it. Trigger sucked, though I never tried changing it. The grip honestly didn't impress me. It just felt dull all of the time. Not that that matters a lot as far as function is concerned, but I just didn't dig it. It felt like a toy.
The Operator was pretty sweet. I sold mine off because of other things associated with it(ex gf bought it for me). The grip was awesome on it, really locked into my hand. Sights were good too. Didn't have much need for the rail, and it adds a few ounces to an already heavy gun while also making holsters harder to find. I would suggest getting a non-railed model if that's not important to you. The thing looked badass too
There's just something about a 1911... |
| I personally like both of those guns...and pie. I voted for the Operator. I read a lot of good reviews about the Operator and wanted one myself, but was told there was a 4 month wait for them (don't know if thats true or not). Still wish I had found one local to me, but I was able to find a Kimber Warrior so I am happy. I don't think you can go wrong with either. |

Quoted: Rails on 1911s = Colt Rail Gun. EDC. Zero failures in 3000 rounds. Will feed from any magazine. Provides the option of a laser or mounted light for home defense.... Whats not to like? PS: I am a 1911/Colt snob. I know what you mean, but the versatility is something you should not over look. |

S&W will stone the sear and some other stuff for an additional $200 or so I think. It still doesn't improve the trigger very much. Moving from a SAO to a striker fired handgun means the triggers are going to be night and day different in their feel. You're comparing apples to lemons on that one. |

I know that a 1911 and a striker fired pistol have completely different triggers. But I do recall seeing an aftermarket sear for the M&P. |

For his use it will be close enough, I am sure someone offers a trigger to a vanek trigger job on a GLOCK. |

They're really quite slim and as long as you have a good holster and gun belt, the weight shouldn't be a big problem. You will need to make sure you use quality mags. About half or more of all 1911 issues are mag related. If it's for HD, I'd lean towards the M&P. Higher capacity, lighter weight. |

Is the trigger that bad on the M&P? I like the option for 14 round mags. If I got the operator I would probably only use Wilson 10rnd mags Is there an aftermarket sear for the M&P to make the trigger better? The M&P trigger isn't as bad as everyone says it is. It sucks compared to a 1911 trigger, but pretty much everything sucks compared to a 1911 trigger. Fortunately, Apex Tactical makes a drop in trigger kit that makes the M&P trigger quite nice. I'd say that the M&P trigger isn't too terribly bad. It's about 1000% better than a Glock. |

However, like everyone has said Apex makes a nice replacement sear for nice price. I have not had a chance to try it out but it apparently works wonders. But stock, I could not dry fire my M&P without disrupting my sight picture. Reset is only slightly noticeable. Truth is, you are deciding between two completely different pistols. I would say narrow your class of gun first(hammer vs. striker fired, polymer vs. all metal), THEN start looking at variances in that design. |
