I went and fondled a G17 yesterday, and I have to say I found it to my liking.  Trigger is heavier than a 1911, but I find that the weird grip angle of the Glock largely counteracts the tendency to pull down when I dry fire tested it.  Bore axis is low like a 1911, so I really appreciated that aspect.

I'm curious about the opinions of those who have used both the 17 and the 19.  I will eventually get my CCW, is there any reason why I can't CCW the 17?  I know the 19 is recommended for that, but they're both basically the same width...I don't think an extra inch of barrel would hinder me on that count.

Would the 17 be easier to shoot accurately than the 19, or is the difference negligible?

I recommend the compact for CCW. There are a lot of guys on here that EDC the fullsize however.

The 17 can certainly be CCWed. I think this question really depends on your size. Big guys I know, or people with big hands, sometimes find the 19 to be too small for them, or the finger grooves don't line up properly for their larger fingers. The 17 fits them well and they will be well served by it.

Conversely, if the 19 fits you well, you can benefit from its smaller size and give up very little in terms of capacity.

I own both. The 19 fits me best of any Glock, but I still like my 17 and use it at bedside with a light attached.

This gun will also be a bedside w/ light gun as well.

I'm 5'10" and weigh 230.  I suspect the 17 will work for me.  I will try to find a 19 that I can fondle and see if it fits my hands, but the 17 was *quite* nice in the hand, no doubt about it.

Many carry G17's.

Accuracy is not much different between the G19 and G17 if any.  Accuracy really comes from the operator between the two platforms.

Both are excellent platforms I would personally recommend the G19 over the G17 for carry it will be a little more comfortable and easier to conceal.  But not to say the G17 is not  or concealable.

I carry both sizes.  If I am going to be out and about in town, I will most often carry my G22.  If I know that I will be sitting in a car or a movie theater for a long time, I will carry the 19.

For me the compact grip is a tiny bit too short, so I open up the slot between the trigger guard and the mag release to give my middle finger more room.  It works well for me.

For CCW there is a slight edge for the 19, but it is not as though it is that much harder to conceal the 17.

If I were you, I would either get both or flip a coin.

Yeah, definitely try to find one and give it a fondle. The 19 works great with a light attached as well. You can probably CCW either one, so I'd pick the one that feels best to you. That may very well be the 17, you're already quite impressed by it.

I own several of both and CCW the G19, have for years, and I love it... but I'm not you, so try to shoot/carry both before you decide (or buy one of each and decide over time
).

FWIW, when CCW isn't an issue I prefer my G34 to either of them... but the G19 is my primary CCW and a G17 resides in each of my vehicles at all time.

i carry my 17 everyday and the only problem is when i sit down it will get uncomfortable after a while. i do however take great comfort in the fact that im carrying a full size gun that. the 19 is a great pistol but ill always want my 17

If you think you like it, go with the G17 first. You'll end up getting the G19 as well sometime down the road.

Then a G34... maybe a G26... or a G17L, if you come across one... then multiples of each...

Interesting photos.  They just don't look that different to me in size, except for the grip length.  I guess that's fairly important though

One-upper...

There's a 17L at Cabela's I've been looking at.

ETA: The price is a little high, though.

If you can get three fingers completely on the 19 grip (most can) I would buy that first.

The 19 is a better CCW and will work fine for everything else.  It's a great all around pistol.

Get a 34 or 17 later for USPSA or IDPA.

I bought a 17 because I find the 19 less comfortable to shoot. In my opinion the extra size of the 17 (which is not much) is more than compensated
by my personal ability to shoot it well. They are both big, fat pistols and neither will be just a joy to carry.

For carry I use a Smith and Wesson model 60 .357 magnum or a Ruger LCP.

Definately handle a 19 before deciding.  If you can't find one I recommend getting the 19 first.  I think it's best to start off smaller when it comes to CCW.

I found a 19 in town today and handled it.  Now I'm REALLY torn

The grip is a bit on the short side.  Not much, but a bit.  Noticeable difference vs the 17.  However, I think I can hold my sight picture steadier with the 19 than the 17.

Tough choice, but I think I'm going to like either one once I decide.  I'm someone who shoots his 357 six gun more accurately DA than SA, so I think the Glock is going to agree rather well with me.

The 17 has a longer slide and a longer grip. :)

Because my hands fit the 19 better than the 17, I too always felt like I could hold the 19 steadier than the 17. I shoot them equally well, so maybe that's just a perception thing. I think you will like either one. I guess I'll side with others here and say that if they both work for you, you might as well go for the 19 and give yourself that extra CCW edge.

Let us know what you do!

One other thing I'd consider: the 19 can take 17 mags, but not vice versa. Don't know if that's an issue for you or not.

For CCW, the extra grip length will be more of an issue than the extra barrel length.  That being said, I have CCW'ed my 17 and 34, but usually my 23, or 19/30 gets the nod.

IF you plan on CCWing it, get the 19(first).  In case you didn't know, the 19 can use G17 and G18(33rd) mags.

Since the hard part to conceal is the grip, you could take a 17 and have the grip cut down/reduced to a 19's size. You will keep the longer sight radius, you can still use the 17 mags if you need to (a 19 can use both, a 17 can only use its own), and you have the smaller grip, which IMHO on the 19 is still very controllable. A lot of the shops can do this reduction, or if you are handy (and careful) you could probably do it yourself.

Kind of like "get both" with just one.

Similar to a CCO 1911; it's an officer's frame 1911 with a commander length slide and barrel.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the 19.  It'll be a couple of weeks before I buy, but I'll post back and let everyone know what I ended up with.
