Kimber Ultra Carry II

Or

Colt 1991 Commander

Found the Kimber for 650 on sale out the dore (gun was purchased but never fired the oner decided to buy a weding ring).  The Colt was on sale for 430 out the dore (this gun was used and fired.)  There is some external ware on the gun from everyday use. I am not sure about the internals but you can bet I am going to check it out.  I do not know if I will carry it or not That might be a hard transition for me I love my Glock.  I just want one and do not know why.  Which one would you buy

I would buy the Kimber since it is new, unless you know tha party you could get the Colt from, and how they take care of their firearms.  Then I would get the Colt, nothing like having a pony

was the colt an old roll mark or new?  Blue or STS?  Did you check trigger pull.  Keep in mind kimber has more mim parts inside, if you care.

I would jump on the colt as a start for a project gun.  But that is me.

Darn, one can buy a lot of ammo for $220...
I will stick my neck out, especially if you do your own gun work and opt for the Colt.
Short of test firing the two for comparison and all else equal, the Kimber would be a close 2nd choice, you can't really lose.
(get both)
The money you saved on the Colt is over 1/3rd downpayment on the Kimber...gun logic.

aI have had 2 Colt's and I regret selling either of them.  I now have 2 Kimber's.  I wouldn't want to part with either of them.  I love Colt's but to me Kimber is the better gun for the money.

Kimber or Colt, I have both and I love both, but what are you going to use the gun for?

The Kimber Ultra Carry is a 3” with an alloy frame, just the ticket for concealed carrying, but a lousy “range gun”.  The recoil is sharp and the sight radius is short, not a problem in a self defense scenario, but definitely not a “fun” gun to pour a couple of hundred rounds through.  I know, I carry one (Colt Defender).

The 1991 is a full size 5” and should be a true joy to shoot but a hassle to conceal (yes, I know people do).

So if you’re looking for a gun to take to the range or leave on your nightstand I would certainly buy the 1991, you’ll love it.

Go with the steel framed Colt. It'll be a better shooter for someone new to 1911's

He has a Glock and wants a 1911, if you can't be constructive and give him advice in the interest of his request why not  be adult enouph to keep your Anti 1911 agenda to yourself.

Hey... I do NOT have an anti 1911 agenda... as I stated before in other posts I very much miss my S&W 1911 actually.

But in all honesty my buddy (who also posts here) and I went to the range with both his Kimbers (4 inch and 5 inch) and he had SEVERAL occasions where spent shell casings got hung up on the extractor. First he thought he had ammo isssues, but switched ammo... and it still happened.

Now I have to admit that his two kimbers are the only Kimbers I have any experience with but it seems odd to me that BOTH of them suffer the same problems... I could go with an ammo problem explanation, but he swithced brands/types and it still happened. Yet my buddy will still swear by Kimber, and tell people how wonderful they are. I have shot both his guns, and they are accurate and smooth, but its the malfunctions he is having that would worry me about it as a ccw gun.

On the other hand the experience I have with my S&W 1911 was great. No mal functions of any kind for the time I had it .... the same with my buddies Colt... he sold it to upgrade to a Kimber but I am beginning to think it was a mistake. I dont recall the Colt even having any problems.

If I could have my SMith and Wesson 1911 back right now I would love it... but ... alas Im sure its making some new owner very happy.

If I remember correctly it only happened with the TLE (internal extractor) and only with the Winchester white box ammo.  I do not remember it happening with the Speer rnds.  I did not have that problem with the ProCarry (external extractor).  By the time I had the problem the ProCarry had been put away for the day.

Hmmm.... I coulda swore it happened with Speer rounds too... I could be wrong.  I still like the 4" better...
