Glock 21sf or Springfield XD 45 service 4"...for general home defense and occasional carry? And why would you choose one over the other?
Thanks! |

21SF without a doubt. IMHO they are more proven, durable, and parts and mags are widely available. I would really try to find one without the ambi mag release and pic rail though. +1, as long as the Glock fits you it's a better choice (for reasons noted above). |
| I had an XD .45 service for a couple of years. It was a good gun, however mine developed a magazine issue. The mags would bulge over time which meant they wouldn't drop free. In all fairness I don't know if the new mags are better or not. I sold the gun and replace it with a Glock. For whatever reason every time I stray from Glock I just end up going back....someday I will learn. |

While I've only compared a G19 to an XD9 4", from that experience, I'd go with the G21SF.
I don't like the amount of muzzle flip the XD has nor can I stand the slide lock placement. The trigger on the Glock felt better to me than the one on the XD as well. Quoted:
Get whichever feels best in your hands. The are both proven, reliable, and well backed pistols. I initially thought XDs felt better in my hands, but I SHOOT Glocks better than XDs. I used to really hate that Glock grip angle. |
XD45. I used to have a stainless Tactical 5" barrel version. Ate everything I could feed it, accurate and felt great in the hand. Had a TLR-1 hanging off of it as my home defense pistol. Only sold it to fund something non-gun related and am looking to buy another. Not sure about another posters comments about the magazines bulging. I had my mags loaded 24/7 and they always dropped free like glass every time in over 5,000 rounds. Their mags are very solid and well made.

I will tell you that I like both equally - the XD service seems to be a bit better to conceal and some models (like mine) have a thumb safety. However I got night sights installed in my glock in less than 30 minutes, and my XD... is still waiting for me to find a gunsmith to install night sights. If you dont care for night sights, I would say you cant go wrong - see which one fits your hand better. |

Those who've owned only the XD45 will say get the XD45. Those who've owned only the SF21 will say get the SF21. Those who've owned both almost always say get the SF21. The math on this isn't hard. Well, I've shot the G21SF and I still bought that XD45c. I can't say I've ever owned the G21SF, however. I keep WANTING to like the G21, but I can't stand the grip on either version of that thing. I shoot them more or less equally, so that's a wash. Yes, I know that's opposite the mainstream opinion here, but it is what it is. I liked my G17 just fine, but it wasn't my primary handgun in any capacity and I wanted an Hakim worse so I no longer have a G17. I'll probably own one again sometime in the future, assuming I can find an acceptable deal on a Gen 2. |

Those who've owned both almost always say get the SF21. Not .45... But I've owned both a G-19 and XD9 Service. I sold the glock and bought more XD's. The Glock is a great weapon but I always felt like I was pushing my wrist forward to account for the grip angle. Muscle memory is not something I want to rely on at 2 AM. The XD is truly 'point and shoot' for me. |

On paper, I'm a big fan of the XD. However, in real life, my hand doesn't fit the XD's idea of where my right thumb should be, but works just fine with either of the Glock frames. Try 'em, and buy the one that fits you. |
