I am thinking one of these will most likely be my next handgun. I have zero experience with decocker safety's, other than handeling a few sig's at the gun shops. Which is the better location for the decocker? Frame or slide? Or should I ask why they made two different designs, is it just preference? All three of my auto's are striker fired and that is really the extent of my experience thus far, is one location going to be better suited for a first decocker gun than the other?
1006 5" barrel with slide mounted safety/decocker. 1066 4.25" barrel with slide mounted safety/decocker. 1026 5" barrel with frame mounted decocker (ala' Sig). 1076 4.25" barrel with frame mounted decocker (ala' Sig). Above info lifted from bren-ten.com Thanks 41 |

Your chances of finding a Smith with the frame mounted decock are pretty slim. I don't think I've seem more than a handful in any caliber in twenty years. For some reason, the Smith frame mounted decocker completely fizzled in the marketplace. Guess that narrows it down then ...
I'm not in a big hurry, however i had hoped to pick one up much sooner than 20yrs. |

I see decocker S&Ws on GunBroker from time to time... especially 5926s. Saw a 4526, 4026s, and a 3926.
I’ve seen 1026s for sale a small number of times in the two years after I picked up my 10mm. I have seen a few 1066s and 1076s on Gunbroker, but not saying that 1006s are never on there. I’m partial to the 1006 due to it being the more common model. I tend to shoot my guns, so buying something that is hard to find is not that smart in my eyes. Try 10mmTalk. They have their own little classifieds section. I bought my 1006 from a member of BerettaForum, who lives in my county... so I would keep my eyes open because deals do pop up. If you want any suggestions, look for a gun with extra magazines. The more the better, being there are only S&W magazines for the 10mm, and they aren’t in huge quantities (prices are also high). I wanted to get six for the gun, but ended up buying another four when I saw them online. MidwayUSA has Wolff springs and the white S&W followers. I rebuilt all of my magazines with those. |
| I have a 4506 and a 1006. I sent them to Novak for a trigger job 20 yrs. ago and had him install a longer, wider, left side safety. I couldn't manipulate the standard safety very well. The ones I have on them now are longer and wider and work much better for me. I also have a SIG 226 and can work the frame mounted decocker ok, but it feels a little strange to me. |

Every once in a while I see a used one pop-up at the local gun show in the $450-$550 price range. They seem to keep their value over the years. Frame vs. slide? Good question...not quite remembering the schematics of the 1006, I seem to recall having a better memory of slide de-cocker being a better design with a firing pin disconnect. |
