I am about to buy a new semi-auto pistol and was wondering what y'all have to say about the ones I am thinking about. I want a .45 with a 5 inch barrel. Cost is an issue here too, so I cant something too expensive. Right now my list is

Auto Ordnance 1911
H&K USP
Springfield XD45
Springfield 1911

I would love to have a 1911, but they are so expensive. If anyone has good information about these or others that I should add to my list, please let me know.

Thanks all

Of those mentioned I would pick the USP.   I'm not an HK Kool-Aid drinker but they do make nice guns.

I'm old school and thought I would  never like a plastic gun. I bought one for my wife (a Glock .40S&W). Amazingly low recoil, simplicity, and the reliability changed my mind. Now I carry it more than she does. I also have a Springfield Armory TRP Operator (PC9105L/full rail) 5" 1911style .45 and I love it. For the range - get whateveryou think is cool. For life or death - Simplicity and Reliability is always # 1.

I guess I'd take the HK out of that bunch. How about a Glock 21 or a S&W M&P45?

Can't go wrong with a USP .45acp, IMO. They're THE most accurate .45 right out of the box & tough as hell. problem is, they're normally around $900+ these days.

Springfield is another good option, both the .45XD & the 1911 Mil-Spec. Either one will serve you nicely & the mil-spec allows you to build on the gun as you can afford it.

Another option you don't list but you should look at is the FNP in .45! 15rds of .45 goodness makes it the largest of the capacities. Mine is just a hair less accurate than my USP's & that's saying something, believe me.

The only one I can say to NOT get is the Thompson A/O 1911. Their quality is less than ideal.

My .o2

Well you said you wanted a 5" barrel which would rule out the USP unless you get the "expert" model. One thing I personally do not like about the HK or XD is the high bore axis so out of that list, I would probably go with the Springfield 1911

You list the USP so cost must not be too big an issue. With that said, I would look at a Sig 220, S&W M&P, or one of the Springfield 1911 models. However a bunch of options would be there if a used gun is acceptable.

It depends on what you're looking for.  Do you want to eventually carry the gun?  If so, go with the SA 1911, or better yet, how about supporting an American company, and buying a new Colt.  The 1911 is about the only 5"  barreled .45 that can be comfortably carried and concealed, due to it's thinness.  If you're not hung up on a 5" barrel, I'd say that a compact version of either of the polymer guns will serve you well.

On the other hand, if you just want a house/range gun then buy whichever one you want, except the Auto Ordnance.

you have a high end list.    have you shot all of them?  i sure would like to have a USP (preferably compact tactical), since i already have 2 xd45s and a RIA 1911, but USP 45 mags seem to be a bit expensive.  my xd45 tactical (5" barrel) is pretty smooth.  so is my 1911.  get all three.

Thanks for all the advice. The HK was thrown in there just as a hopeful, if I could find a low price at all. I really want a 1911, but the XD45 also feels good in my hands when I shoot it. Right now carry concealed isnt the biggest thing. I live in DC, am 20, and go to the Naval Academy, so there isnt a whole lot of time when I would be carrying yet. However, I will be getting my carry concealed next year, and possibly a new handgun, depending on my money situation. Again, thanks for the advice, I cant wait to get my weapon!

Why not then get a gently used Beretta 92FS first? This will allow you to practice for your service quals & ace them, IMO.
