I know that it is not the best 1911 out there, but... Can I (down the road) upgrade this pistol into something to be proud of? Any input on the pistol itself? Any downfalls the pistol might have that would prevent me from upgrading? Thanks in advance, you all have been extremely helpful. -Op

Yes, it can be upgraded. Its a popular base pistol for full custom jobs.

IMO, there's only 3 areas in need of upgrading: sights, barrel & trigger.

I had all three replaced on mine & it now shoots as good or better than a Colt Gold Cup for about half the price.

SA uses a two-piece barrel on their cheaper models & it's accuracy is less than desireable. Replace the bbl first, IMO.

Does SA use any MIM parts?

I personally have a hard time with the arched mainspring housing and the original grip safety.

You can do a variety of things with a SA as a base gun. You are limited only by your imagination and wallet.

Not that I'm aware of. Colt & Kimber both do.

I have a hard time with the straight MSH. This is why Brownells stays in business, eh?

three things to do to 1911's:

re-weld and re-fit slide, bushing, and barrel

trigger job 3.5lbs

replace beavertail with a Les Baer beavertail and bob hammer for compatibility.

If I could only do three things those would be them.

The barrel doesn't need to be replaced, simply re-welding and fitting it will result in 3inch groups at 50yds.
