Is there a good, inexpensive Hi-Power clone?
I have a 1911 and have recently become interested in getting a Hi-Power, but I do not want to spend a lot of money.

I've had good luck with the Hungarian FEG clone, priced (at the time, $199 OTD) still under $250 used.
While not as refined as the BHP, parts interchange as with some other clones with the original.
I feel I got more than I bargained for at $199.

I have also had (mostly) good luck with the FEG Hi-Power knock-offs.  I have one of the older hard-chromed models that is utterly reliable & a great shooter.  The only one I ever had problems with was a more recent one - blued with the "vent-rib" on top of the slide.  The extractor broke almost immediately & it was/is extremely ammo-sensitive.  But I've had several come through my hands & this is the only "lemon" I've encountered.

What about the new Charles Daly?

And if I decide to spend the money, is a new FN any better than a new Browning?

Thanks for the replies.

The arcus was getting pretty good reviews for awhile, then the supply dried up. Think they're available again now.

The FN P-35 SA and the Browning HiPower are the same gun. FN has always been the company that made the HP.

I own most of the clones as well as the Brownings. Functionally, I'd rate the Arcus as the best, followed by the FM M-95 and the FEG PJK 9HP as the prettiest of the bunch but not quite up to the other two in quality.

The Charles Daly is being made by Dan Wesson from parts brought in from Hungary. I don't know if the parts are still made by FEG and if so, they are very definitely a changed design from the FEG PJK 9HP. That would not be surprising because FEG was known for making changes in the frames and slides almost annually.

I've read the Arcus internals aren't 100% interchangeable with HP internals, as is the case with some of the other clones.  Mags work fine.

crazyquik, the Arcus'internal parts are a lot closer to a Browning/FN than a FEG. I am sure I would opt for the Arcus over the other clones. I own a FEG, Arcus, and several BHPs including a FM. The FM isn't a clone, it is a licensed copy. Regards, Richard :D

Aren't FEG high powers double action?

I owned an FEG Hi-Power a few years back...I regret getting rid of it. I was originally looking to use it as a base for some custom work (i.e. reliability package, barrel crowning, trigger job, and sights) but was initially concerned of the steel quality. So, I contacted Don Wiliams @ The Action Works: www.theactionworks.com/Default.htm

...regarding the quality of materials used in the FEG model. His comments were favorable of the steel used and mentioned that using the FEG Hi_power as a base for custom work wasn't a bad idea.

I may still get around to that project here in the near future...

Not exactly.  FEG made a traditional DA auto that you might say was "inspired" by the HiPower (it vaguely resembled an overly-large HiPower).  It went by a few different designations (the ones I have are model "PR-9") & had a DA trigger, a hammer-drop safety a la S&W, and a proprietary 15-round magazine (it did NOT use HiPower mags).

The ones all/most of us are talking about here are actual copies (clones, if you will) of the HiPower design and DO utilize HiPower mags.  The best of those I have is called a "PJK-9HP."

Yeah, I had one, good gun, cheap, worked, no problems, shot 6000 and sold it.  I used to have a comparison to the Browning practical somewhere...

I remembered this thread when I got home last night & pulled a few out for pictures.  From top to bottom:

FEG PR-9  (the double-action "pseudo-HP" mentioned above)

FEG FP-9  (a recent HP clone - only so-so, IMO)

FEG PJK-9HP  (older HP clone - very good pistol, IMO)

10-4, thanks I'll have to check out a PJK-9HP.
