Hello everyone,

My buddy dropped off his S&W Model 645. It was really nasty. Rusted and hadn't been shot in who knows how long. I think he said it was kept in his bathroom for years.

I cleaned it up real good, oiled, removed rust etc...

Issue is when the slide is on and the pistol is in 1 piece, no action on the trigger. If I remove the slide it will operate both SA and DA.

Any suggestions? I am by no means a gunsmith but I can make it any worse than it already is so I figured I would attempt to fix it for him and give back a functioning clean pistol.

It looks nearly brand new after the detailed cleaning.

Thanks for any advice...

These pistols have a magazine safety so that if there is no mag in the pistol it will not fire. Put an empty mag in the gun(make sure it is not loaded) and pull the trigger. The hammer should work. Take out the mag and it should not work.

Thank you. I was thinking that might be the case but he left me w/no magazine...

Thanks again!

Your welcome! They are fantastic guns and you should buy it from him since he cares for it so poorly letting it rust up like that.

Was about to chime in with the "mag disconnect" issue as well.
There is a plastic plunger in the frame/slide that can wear and lead to total lack of firing cause it'll never engage correctly.

Spectacular pistol... shame they quit making the 645/4506 line back in 1999.
They still make the 4566/4563, but I'd miss that extra inch of barrel.
