Are there any resources for the parts/steps to build a 1911 pistol. On Wilson's/Les Baer's website there looks to be all the parts you need. Is this something that anyone has done? Thanks in advance! |

Hey! All depends on what you mean by "build". If you are going to start by using a 60% frame thats needs machining, I would suggest that you check out the following: www.roderuscustom.tzo.com Frank Roderus offers a lot of valuable info (for free) on building 1911 type pistols. He also has weekly interactive workshops where you can ask questions live. If your interested in just replacing parts, ie; extended slide release, barrel bushings, barrels, etc. I would suggest that you pick up the "1911 series" books (volumes I & II) written by Jerry Kuhnhausen. These cover everything you will need for the above mentioned as well as other tricks for building and tuning the 1911 pistol. They also provide detailed drawings with specs on every part of the 1911 pistol which will come in handy should you decide to purchase the "unfinished frames". There is also a good beginners reference manual written by Ed Brown (Ed Brown's 1911 bench manual). This will give you a good start in that area. Have Fun! |

Sarco Inc sells a "everything but the frame" kit for about $170. For a first time build I did this. The Brazilian parts while cosmetically ugly are good and my build turned out to be accurate. Building your own gun is a lot of fun. Check out www.m1911.org for some good info. FYI make sure you read the section about tuning an extractor. |
You can buy an Essex frame for $120 plus a FFL fee. www.essexarms.com/ Make sure you get one with the ejector already installed. Tools. Most of what you need you should already have. (Files, punches, ect..) You really sort of hand fit the parts. Just make sure you take your time and don't get "dremel tool happy". You can destroy parts pretty quick doing that. Buy one of those military GI manuals and do some reading online. Before you fire have a competant gunsmith check it out for you. |
