I'm looking for a good 9mm. I know the Glock 19 would be perfect, but Glocks don't fit me well, especially with the finger grooves. I know they are excellent firearms, but I'd like some other suggestions. I'd like it to be relatively compact, but not too much so, and either be cheap to get repaired, or have customer service that will repair it free. Has to be reliable, good for both carry and range use, and stand up very well to high round counts. I want a gun that is going to last me forever. Thanks for any advice.

And not too much over $500. I don't care if its used, although people around my area are trying (successfully) to sell their very used firearms for $50 off of retail......

The only way to know what pistol will fit your hand well is to get as many of them in your hands as possible.

Two pistols that feel "right" to a lot of people are the BHP and CZ 75.

I like the CZ. I'm looking at the CZ75 compact, or the CZ P01. Are the mags interchangeable? I like the safety on the CZ75c.

The only gun that just doesn't fit me seems to be 3rd generation Glocks. Those finger grooves don't line up at all...

Look into the Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm.  It meets all of your criteria.

Another vote for S&W M&P.. I also really like my Kahr K9 Elite. The Kahr is the most accurate gun I've ever fired (even beat the HK P7 I used to have) and since it's all steel there isn't much recoil.

Check out the Ruger SR9, if you want to.

Been reading and hearing about them so much, I had to have one, and MAN is
it nice.

Makes all the Glocks I've ever fired look like a booger; it fits my hand so much better,
it's more accurate (in my hands, at least) and it's got a safety, too. The slide is not
blocky, the grips don't feel like a waffle iron, and it DOESN'T have polyogonal rifling;
no Ka-booms from shooting lead slugs.

AND, the price is right.

I don't know nothing about the recall; mine was made a coupla months ago, and it
has the trigger safety, a la Glock.

Not saying the Glock is a bad gun, mind, but this Ruger is, to me, a much better buy.

All the pistolas mentioned thus far are good 9mm's, IMHO. Check 'em out and pick one.

My youngest son is planning on buying the Springfield XD(M) when he gets back from
overseas. But, that's a $700.00+ gun.

Once again, I'm not saying the Glock is a bad gun. I myself just don't care for them.

I vote Beretta 92.  It is a great gun that is very accurate right out of the box.  Mags are cheap and plentiful and you can pick one up used for around $375-$400.  Great must have gun for any collection IMO.

*Just read your post again about having a smaller gun... on that note, I'd go with a springfiled XD 9mm in a 4" model.  You could also go with a Sig P6 for around $300.  Very good gun for the price, but it only has a single stack mag.

topgunsupply.com often has CPO Sig pistols for sale.

Many gunbroker/whatever dealers have police trade-ins.

Hit a local store, see what fits your hand. Even better, find a range that will rent you a couple, kill a box of ammo and then start looking for something that you know you might actually like.

Just depends on what you like. Seems most these days prefer the composite pistols. I believe the CZ mags are interchangable and you can't go wrong with the Compact.  I just bought one and the accuracy really surprised me. I'm not a bad shot but I'm not gifted either. The CZ sure makes it easy. The Compact is pretty heavy though and probably not the best choice for CC.  If the size and weight suit your needs, you won't be disappointed.

I might be trading my XD45c for a XD9 bitone... I like XDs, I really don't understand all the hate for them here. I'd accept any good trade offer, but so far, the only one I've got that is fair is the XD9. I'd like to try out the M&P, someday. I plan on getting one at some point in the future. And I sure would like a CZ someday...

you handled a Glock and dont like it.  why did you stop trying other guns?

its the best way to find out what fits your hands.

if you have any rental ranges in your area, look there too, especially to shoot them.

there are so may out there, but its better if you do your part and try some first and then see what you iike.

Sig's are definitely nice, and the my friend's XDm feels great.

To the other guy, I have been trying out lot's of different guns, and there are quite a few that I like. I was going to get a Glock until I felt and fired a 3rd gen. The finger grooves are terrible for me. Same with the 17. They just don't line up right. The XDm felt great, the XD felt good as well, the M&P was a very nice gun, but not light-years ahead of the XD like everyone here says (at least in 9mm). The CZ 75c was nice, too. I'll just get whatever I can find used and for a good price. It might take a while around here.....

Thanks for all of your posts.

I haven't been able to find a pistol that fits me better than the CZ.  Their pistols are rock solid in 9mm, but some of their offerings in .40 have had a few issues.

The majority of CZ mags are interchangeable.  The only models that have unique mags are the RAMI, 40P, TS, and P-07.  The compact models(Compact, PCR, P-01) use the same 14rd mags.  You can also use the 16rd mags from the 75B/BD/SA and 19rd mags from the SP-01, they just stick out the bottom.

Check out czcustom.com.  They have compacts for $530 shipped.

There is also the new CZ- the P-07 which is a poly pistol and can be had for ~$450.  Its about the size of a Glock 19.

I would guess that there are many more good 9mm pistols available now than ever before.

Beretta, Browning, CZ, Glock, Sig, S&W M&P, Springfield, Walther, etc.

Have fun checking them all out. Take your time.

Good luck!

Just a normal XD9 would be a good bet. XDm's are being advertised around here for $599. That's what I have. Great pistol, my favorite polymer 9 on the market today. The M&Ps are pretty nice too, but I've only shot a 40 in the compact, felt good though. I had a glock for a while but once I started shooting some XDs I realized just how crappy the Glock felt in my hand.

I would work off of the list above, in the order I rearranged them in. I went with option #2 but if I could do it again, I would probably have gone with option #1

I might just go with that. Its mechanical design seems very similar to the Glock's (when you look at the schematics) and it feels good in the hand. Not overly big, not too small. Either this, an XD9 or a Glock 19, depending on which I can find first and for the best price. And, hopefully, someday, all three! And then some...

15 rounds of 9mm, plus an extra mag.

My local shop has them retailing for right around $500-$550.

Plus, I like the de-cocking feature of the firearm better than the "Safe Action" Glock system or the "cocked-and-locked" of the 1911.
