I have an opportunity to acquire a nickel finish Colt MkIV Series 70 in about 90% condition. What would be a fair price to pay for a pistol like this?

Thanks in advance!

$600-$650

Shoot it first if you can. Colt's are good but accuracy sometimes is poor.

I own two series 70's, and LOVE them both.  I would take them over my fathers Kimber anyday of the week.  He seems to like them as well, as he is always trying to get me to trade.  I paid 450 for my first one, and 600 for my lightweight.  I saw a gold cup at the gunshow today, the dealer was desperate and told me I could have it for 650.....wish I had the cash.

I like Colt roll marks and Colt guns, I just know that they are not very accurate in most cases.

The Colt Gold Cup National match accuracy standard was 5inches at 25yds and all Kimbers made will do better than that. Triggers are mostly poor stock.

Colt's with some custom work and accurizing make beautiful 1911's, but they allready have a higher price tag and custom work isn't cheap.

A custom Colt will simply cost more than a Customized Kimber, or Les Baer production gun.

Look at it (all prices off the top of my head):

Colt MKIV SERIES 70 $650
Kart Barrel $125
Fitting with match bushing $75
Fitting slide to frame $100
Bo-mar cut rear sight/new front w/part $145-$235
Replace short trigger with long trigger $35
Replace Hammer with hardened commander hammer $65
Hardened Sear $15
Trigger job $45
Beavertail grip safety fitted $50-70
Extended saftey fitted $45 $70 for ambi.
Checker frontstrap $125-$175+
Refinish $75-$150

That comes to $1600 with all the cheapest prices quoted and has all the features of a $1350 Les Baer Premier II except for the ambi safety and $45 grips.

Add grips and

That will be a beautiful 1911 that works as well as it looks. My dad owns one but I don't.  If you get lucky once and a while you can find a gun with some work allready done but otherwise you are paying for everything.

It appears to me you are comparing a custom gun to a production custom gun.  Two different worlds here.  Volume of sales allows the Les Baer to ofer those features for the prices he does.  A fairer comparison would be between Les Baer and a company like Wilson (both production customs).

I get the impression you feel you must do these mods in order to have a gun worth owning.  In my experience this is not true.  I have a 1991A1 that set me back $350 when I bought it new.  Out of the box it was 100% reliable shooting 2" groups at 25 yards.  What more could I want for a defensive pistol?  I modified it a little bit to fit me, but the total cost has not exceeded $450.

YMMV, but in my experience All the mods are not necessary.  They just allow you to personalize the gun to your tastes.  The average person will not realize an improvement in their scores by adding all those mods.
