Hey guys, haven't posted in a long time, but here goes... 21 is just under a year away and I'm starting to think about getting a pistol for CCW. I'm leaning towards the offerings from Glock, Sig, and H&K. I was considering a baby 9 from Glock or any of the previously metioned companies compacts. By the time I get it, that wretched AWB will have sunset and mag capacity won't be an issue. If it will help: Medium build, 165lbs, 6'0" tall, with some handgun experience and no formal training (yet). Any thoughts from the more experienced and knowledgable crowd on what I should look at? |

Of the companies mentioned, the G26 and the Sig 239 would be the smallest packages for carry if that concerns you. The H&K Compacts are great guns, but they are not all that "compact" in my book. The Sig 228/229s aren't either as far as I'm concerned. On the other hand, many guys carry full sized handguns all the time and have little problem hiding them from casual observation. Much of this depends on your wardrobe and what you can tolerate in holsters, etc. for all day carry. A LW Colt Officer's Model or similar is about the limit for me with an IWB holster...even the G26 is too wide for my liking with this method of carry. If you want to look like a GQ poster boy, your options are different from someone who dresses in boots and jeans, etc. every day. I'll beat sig_230 to the punch here (Ha!) and say you should be sure to get a good quality belt, one designed to use for handgun carry, as well as a good holster. Too many guys forget about the belt! |

You've got quality brands on your list of what you're interested in, so that's a plus. But nobody can recommend how each of those feels in your hand. For example a Glock feels like a brick in my hand, so I wouldn't get one for me, despite the fact that I know they make quality handguns. So fondle and fire every quality handgun you can to find the 'right' one between now and your birthday. As for your size, I'd say it is in your favor in the CCW department. Six feet and a buck-sixty-five should leave some 'extra fabric' for concealment. Oh- I strongly second the gunbelt remark. Might even want to get it now so it's plenty broken in by the time it carries a gun. |
