| how does the .357 sig compare to the .40cal. I have a glock 23 (.40cal) I was thinking about buying a .357 sig barrel and using it as a conversion. That brings up the question what to use for carry purposes. |

Here is a recent thread on it: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=4&t=7611 |

Wow, plenty of crabbing in that thread I like the .357 Sig. I find it easy to shoot, it makes a big noise and annoys others at the indoor range with its flash. It is reasonably accurate, maybe more so than the .40 barrel in the same gun (226 and 239). That said, I usually carry the 239 with the .40 barrel installed. |

I was so impressed with the .357Sig I bought a second USP in that caliber for carry. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but the .40S&W has a much higher chamber pressure rating in CUP units. Thus while having a bit higher velocity, the .357Sig is safer to shoot & puts less strain on the shooter & gun. My .o2 |
| The 357 Sig came about with Sig trying to come up with a propriatery round to equal or come close to equaling the 357 Magnums ballistics with the 125 grn load. This load had the highest incidence of one shot stops according to the work of Evan Marshalls. If his work can be deemed credible is up to debate among people smarter than moi but it is based on actual verifiable accounts of actual gunfights and the 125 grn 357 Mag had a 96% rating of one shot stops. As you know the 357 Sig comes very very close if not matching the Mags numbers especially if you look at equal length barrels. What I guess I'm trying to say is I own 2 357 Sig cal. pistolas and IMHO it is a very formidable cal that finds a place on my person frequently. |
| I picked up a HK 357 sig compact a while back and now that I have gotten used to shooting it, I really like the gun and the caliber. I had a chance to chrony some cheap Winchester white box 125gr JHP loads at the range and they averaged just over 1300 fps out of the 3.5" barrel. Pretty close to 357mag ballistics in the same bullet weight range. I don't find the recoil that difficult to deal with and the muzzle blast and flash are fine too. As far as the pressure rating, the 357 Sig is about 5,000 psi higher than the 40 in standard loads, not sure about CUP but I assume they would track the same. |

My advise is to go to Tactical Forums and do a search for 357 SIG. There is a ton of info. www.tacticalforums.com/ I really enjoy shooting handguns in this cal. The effect on human tissue is more similar to 9mm than 40S&W, and only allows the mag capacity of the 40. Therefore it is not my first choice for a carry gun. They sure are fun at the range however.BOOM! |
