I'm learning my way around taking care of a handgun but couldn't find an answer to this question, maybe you guys can help me out.

If I replace a factory barrel in a semi-auto with another factory barrel of the same manufacture, do you need to check headspace due to the barrel swap out?  What about after-market barrels, do you need to do a headspace check if its a different manufacturer?

Its my understanding that changing barrels or bolts in a rifle, you would need to do that, but I don't know about pistols.

What kind of pistol is it? Usually you have to fit the barrel to the slide. Sometimes you can get drop in barrels that work without much fitting though.

1911s require fitting.

This.

I'm not sure what's out there for the XD, but some aftermarket barrels will probably require fitting for it as well.

HK, Sig, and Glock have aftermarket barrels that are drop in replacements, others require custom work IIRC.

I emailed Springfield a while back asking if an xd45 tactical barrel (5") would be able to drop in a service model's slide (4"), they said no, because their barrels are fitted to the slide.  I eventually bought an xd45 tactical and tried to drop it into my xd45 service, but the tactical slide wouldn't lock up.  It seemed to be too tight.

Handguns don't require measuring for headspacing, generally. Many headspace on the extractor hook, some might on the casehead itself, but I don't recall which ones those would be.

If a rd is too short for a chamber, then it'll just rattle around in there & not be accurate. If it's too long, the slide won't close & the gun probably won't fire as it's out of battery.

Since a bbl almost always has the slide catch going thru it, there's not much room in there for error, IMO. A bbl's hood & lugs will need some slight attention in most guns.
