One of the hoops I have to jump through being a resident of the People's Republic of Maryland is that any new gun I buy has to have a shell casing on file with the State Police. It adds $50 onto any transfer I make from an out of state dealer, and as a law abiding citizen who pays his taxes on time and mows his lawn on a regular basis, I resent the intrusion. Today I found myself thinking about that shell casing and what exactly makes that casing unique to my gun. What makes a shell casing such an accurate identifier of a handgun? I would think the firing pin indent would be somewhat unique maybe, but what about other things, like the extractor?

While were at it, how accurate is ballistic fingerprinting? Can they really match a bullet to a particular gun with a high degree of accuracy?

Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

extractor marks, chamber striations, ejector markings, firing pin indent, breach face markings all unique to each firearm.

Yet MD has yet to solve a crime with their database.

To OP, check www.mdshooters.com for a source on a good place to get your pistol cased.

I'm from TX, just visiting MD on the Air Force's dime.  I hope to be back to a free state sometime soon.

ETA you're totally correct

Then technically you're a resident of both Texas and Maryland if you meet the conditions layed out by the ATF in their "what constitutes residency" faq.  If you have some type of residence in Texas, while living on station in Maryland, you can legally buy a handgun in either state.

ETA––Or you could just move off base to VA(which as far as gun laws go, makes Texas look bad), or DE, as they don't require any shell casings either.  If this is not possible, then as I said, you probably have some type of home address in Texas, and can buy your guns there.

The ratio of money spent to cases solved has got to be ridiculous.

Yeah, I don't buy that shit for a second. SOME guns may have a machining abnormality, burr, or whatever that makes them unique, but for the most part I don't buy it.

I'd really like to fire 4 or 5 different types of ammo from 4 or 5 identical handguns and see how well they match them up. I'd bet money that they can't.

They have the same shit in NY and it hasn't solved ANYTHING.

That's because all the 'legal' pistols are for the most part not used in criminal activity.
