What is more your handgun collecting/purchasing style?  Do you buy all glocks (just an example...) or do you go for all types of platforms (glock, 1911, 92fs, XD etc. all in one collection)?  I understand that in tough situations having only one platform is ideal if for no other reason than it is so ingrained in you (robotic) but for sheer enjoyment in life, variety is great!!  I tend to be a variety guy.  No duplicate or similar guns in my small but growing collection.  Just curious about you guys.

I'm not a collector - Guns are tools. Very cool tools, but tools.

I can admire "pretty" or "cool" guns and all but I'm interested in reliability and consistency.
As such, I've gone the all-9mm Glock route with j-frames for unique situations.  I shoot friends' handguns for familiarization.

But that's just me - if I had loads of spare cash and nothing better to do, I'd probably pick up a few common handguns for familiarization training.

I love to collect and shoot different handguns.

At the moment, I've consolidated them in terms of caliber.

9mm, .45 acp, .357 magum.

Commonality for me. I have 2 CZ's (soon to be 3) all in 9mm and 2 Springfield 1911's. I know what I shoot well and what fits in my hands so thats what I buy. I've tried Glock's and XD's with no prevail. When it comes to my next purchase it will be another 1911.

Just finished consolidating a few months ago, all the same. While it might make for a boring collection, it's a boring, effective collection. The wife really likes it, no hesitation of which safety, decocker, DA/SA, etc.

My first 4 are to balance the capabilities.

The rest are fun.

I have mostly poly framed, striker fired .40 cal pistols with a little variety thrown in.

When I turned 21 and first got into handguns, I went for variety.

9 years later and I have switched to commonality.

Caliber commonality, that's about it.

I'm sticking with 9mm and .45ACP - the only exceptions being the occasional milsurp (like the Romy Tok I bought last year).

i decided a long time ago when i first got into shooting that i would collect mostly 22LRs.

almost every mfg made some type of 22LR and i knew i would NOT be able to get a sample of each.  but i realized that it was the PURSUIT that was fun.  Researching, reading, learning about the various 22LRs out there and trying to find within my reach $$ is fun.

i knew i would also deviate from the 22LR so i made a list of all of the calibers i would buy.   9mm,  357mag, 10mm, 44 mag, 45acp, 45LC, 223, 30m1, 30-30, 7.62x39, 308, 30-06

lately ive been focusing on CZ75 series, odd 9mm and 45acp pistols.  But it was vary with what is going on and what i discover.

my interest in guns leads me to want different kinds.....  i consolidate to 9mm, 10mm and .45 and I have mostly Glock with a couple SA and just got my first HK USP...  My plans were to have 2 Glock .45s, 2 Glock 10mm and 2 Glock 9mm but I'm not all the way there yet.

Handguns commonality.

Long guns, thats another story.

When I first started, variety was king.

Now that I've got some decent shooting experience/maturity, I appreciate the advantages of commonality.

All of my 9mm's are Glocks.

My 45's are 1911's and HK's.

By and large, my "serious" guns are the Glock 9mm's.  I shoot them 90% of the time, and almost exclusively while "training".  Personally, I've never had a problem switching platforms and have found that shooting my 9mm Glocks always works WITH my 1911's and HK's, not against.

Because of my grip and habits, the safety on the 45's isn't an issue either.  Regardless of what I am shooting, I "push the safety down" during my draw, and "push the safety up" before resholstering.

This way should I have to grab a 1911 or HK, I will always be prepared to deal with condition one.

You don't NEED to have the same platform for every gun you own, but it helps.  There are things you can do to reduce potential issues, such as "using the safety", even if you're using a Glock.

I'm a fan of the commonality train of thought.  I do try to keep up with how to use the various number of guns out there in case I may need to someday, but the guns I use for defense are all the same so that when I train with one I train with them all.

LOL I have been toying with the idea of picking up a G19.   But I must say I do cringe at the thought of having to support a whole new platform with mags, ammo, holsters, mag pouches and spare parts....

+1
I've been focusing on these calibers also.  Glock pistols (9mm), Sig Sauer (.45 ACP), and S&W (.357 magnum) are pretty much what I enjoy.  I've also been gravitating to dedicated .22lr pistols (Ruger and S&W .22lr semi auto pistols).

My First hand gun was bought for protection so I got a Sig P226 in .40.  After that I got a M&P 40.  I wanted to stick with a common caliber to help with reloading cost.  I recenlty bought a .357 mag for special occasion carry.  I also jumped into the 9mm world due to wanting to shoot in competitions.  When I bought my 9mm I got a MP9 it is the same size and same controls as my M&P40.
