My Glock 23 is my first pistol. After a 3 day pistol themed up north trip I've learned a great deal about why there are so many glocks. I bought my Glock on a whim when i saw a good deal on it. Got it home and didnt care for it much, its a rectangle with a handle; Fugly. Its plastic... i want my pistol to be wood and steel, something i could use as a hammer if i wanted to. -1 First day of the trip my friends and i inspect eachothers new buys and findings. We had my Glock, a HK USP compact .40, and a Berretta 92. A friend picks up the Glock, and drops it on the hardwood floor. More damage was done to the floor than the Glock. +1 We ATVed out to where we were going to shoot, as my friends packed up their guns in cases to avoid getting them dirty. I left mine in the holster, after all, its a Glock. +1 After 3 days of trials of clearing rooms and accuracy testing maybe 10 times on enterances my friends would have been shot dead because they forgot to take their safety off. +5 Knowing every time i took the Glock out and pulled the trigger, it would shoot. +100 All 3 were as accurate as needed. Overall, im very, very happy with the Glock. 500 rounds in 3 days with no cleanining, no jams. Friends didnt have jams either, but they went to great lengths to keep their guns clean. I didnt abuse the Glock, but i didnt baby it either. I thought i would post this to maybe push someone over the edge to buy a Glock. If your going to carry buy a Glock, it might just save your life. |

I like Glocks, but other than the price, I like HK's as well. They're like Glocks with more user selectable options (various choices on safeties, trigger pull, the ability to carry cocked and locked, etc...). They just cost 1.5x what a Glock costs for all the additional consumer options. Plus, HK was the first on the market with polymer handguns. Glock came later, but did a good job with their design. I only wish the full sized models didn't have a huge hump. This is another area HK and other companies give users a choice on. |

Glocks are great. My indoor firing range Santa Anita Firing Range(Monrovia Calif 5 miles east of Los Angeles) had a Glock 17 that shot 500,000 when it broke the slide. The slide was replaced, and the number of rounds shot officially was 750,000 when the range closed. But unofficially, the round count was much higher because people would often smuggle in ammo from the outside. To boot, the counter help would only clean the Glock(which was few and far between) when the customer complains of jamming. It would taken <5 minutes, disassemble; dunk in solvent tank; brush dirty areas such as rails, hood area, locking areas etc; compressed air blow dry; CLP on the rails and barrel hood; reassemble; and back to customer. Glocks are great guns. |
| Glocks are great platforms when you wish to capitalize on their strengths and have little concern for their shortcommings. That said, I am with your friends. Pretty much all quality "duty-size" weapons should be able to withstand 500 round reliability trials without issue, but that is no excuse to become lazy with your gun hygiene if there is any dependence upon the platform for carry/defense. Glocks are one of the most forgiving designs, but that's of little consequence the day it counts. Keep up good hygiene regardless of your weapon's capabilities. |
Congratulations on your first gun, after firing a couple of hundred rounds and a few of your friends pistols you are now an internet handgun expert. Go forth and share your knowledge. |

I've had it for a bit but this was my first test, i know there is a lot of debate if a Glock if a good choice for a first pistol. I was also a Glock hater before i tried one out, so i figured i might get someone else to change. Don't ever take anybody's word over the internet, but maybe i'll spark a glock haters curiosity at least. As far as the post number; the closed mouth gathers no foot. |

I'm a guy who grew up with 1911's, Garands, Walther P38's, Springifeld O3's and Browning High Powers. I absolutely LOVE wood and steel guns. I cherish every one I own and I own quite a few. But, every pistol I use for self defense has GLOCK stamped on the slide. It's not because I think they're pretty, or they feel good in my hand, or they impress my buddies. It's because they just get the damn job done every time with the least hassle and drama of any gun I've every owned. |
