I am considering an HK45.  It would have to supplant my 1911.

Why shouldn't I switch!

Why would you?

As long as youve got a Sig P220, go for it.

Have you looked at the HK45?

That's what turned me off. Shoots well enough, but it's so dang ugly.

Get Both??

I've got a HK45 USP and I really like it.  It's a great pistol although it's a little meaty.  It's not as bad as some make it out to be.  I don't have huge hands but I have no problem shooting it well.

However, I do enjoy shooting my 1911's much more than the USP. If I had to choose one, I'd go with a 1911.

Is it okay to compare the 1911 platform to another?  This seems to be the only place to ask the question I asked, since the 1911 forum is where I will find those most interested in 1911s.  Or?

As I always preach...Application.

What is the point of your purchase. There is a 1911 made/configured to cover any application, well.

Are there other brands/designs that may address a certain application better than a 1911? I would imagine so. The question is, is YOUR application such an application?

CCW? No. the thin design, the weight options (extra recoil management/lightweight), and the fact that you are already familiar with the platform makes the 1911 a better choice.

Competition? Depends on the 1911, but I would wager the 1911 is favored.

Home/Duty/non-CCW Defense? The HK may be more adventageous with the extra capacity and rail mount.

Fun? Sometimes you just want to play with something different. Only you can answer whether it is worth the cost of the weapon, and super-expensive proprietary magazines for a change of pace.

You have to go with whatever makes the most sense to you. Personally handgun choice to me comes down to simple personal preference, seldom has anything to do with logic.

It's not a "forever" choice.  Buy it, shoot it, don't like it, sell it.

If you can try before you buy, that always good too.

I played with one at SHOT. Probably the nicest feeling grip of any handgun I've ever handled.  I have one in route to my dealer.  If it doesn't live up to my expectations, I'll sell it for something else.

....You're not losing it................. I moderate the 1911 discussions forum where this was originally posted. My first post was made there before I moved it here.

Okay, details:  Nighthawk GRP Recon w/rail, 5in, vs HK45

Yes I want CCW, although my primary AZ almost/always/hot/weather carry is P7M8; the .45 choice is also a combat/exposed carry sidearm for SHTF/tactical carbine classes (P7s tend to burn your fingers after 60 quick rounds or so).

HK45 advantages:  lower maintenance, higher capacity; more manageable safety features, lighter weight
NH1911:  longer barrel/higher velocity; trigger; thinner profile; familiarity; I already own it.  Fabulous customer support, tho slightly greater likelihood that It may be needed.

It would be nice to simply buy an HK45 and compare, but I know what would happen:  I would wind up keeping both, and would be back in the "hobbyist" business, with more money tied up in handguns, because of course i would keep both.

Just looking for advice as to whom here has faced this comparison already, and what conclusions they reached.

Have you ever tried getting parts for an HK? They're not exactly known for being civilian customer service friendly.

You already have top of the line Semi Custom 1911 that is perfectly suited for your desired intention. It has a better trigger, lower bore axis, better overall ergonomics and has an easy and plentiful spare parts and accessories availability.

I quit playing with a plethora of different platforms about a decade ago when I realized the 1911 was the only one I really liked and was the one I always choose to carry when given a choice.

Wow, SGB, that may be the best and clearest answer I ever got from several hundred posts here over 7 years or so.

Thanks.  Also Pulp guy!

Sounds like you got your answer already, but here is just a warning... I am where SGB was that decade ago... I have 6 different platforms represented by 14 different handguns... and am having trouble deciding on which I like the most... and thus far I have spent a boat load of cash on handguns, most of which sit around till I get the itch for something different.

I have selections in both autos and revolvers from Glock, SIG, HK, Taurus, Colt, Rossi, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, and Kel-Tec...

So if you currently like/shoot well/have a top notch 1911 already then well... if it aint broke why fix it?
