| Wanting a lightweight carry around beater pistol for hiking and fishing in 40 S&W. Are the XD's as reliable as a Glock. |
I have about 2500-3000 rounds through my XD-40 Service, and about 1000-1500 rounds through my XD-40 subcompact, and have never had a malfunction in either one. I have shot both Glocks, and like the XD series way better. The Glocks are just as reliable, I just like the XDs features and feel better. |

Flame-resistant suit ON I've seen numerous XDs in training classes have double feeds, jams and lock with the slide forward and a round in the chamber to the point that it takes 2 guys to free the slide up. XD mags have seemed (to me) to be the source of most of the problems. When they get dirty, I've seen the mags bind-up and cause issues. This isn't to say that glocks never have problems - but they tend to be among the most trouble-free handguns I see in the classes I've attended. (HKs and lubed-up Sigs have worked well also). The one thing that COMPLETELY sucks about Glocks are the crappy plastic sights. If it's going to be used as a potential "People Gun", I recommend XS-Big-Dot Sights or meps / trijicons if you're dead-set on more "traditional" sights. The Ergos of the XD are nice and if it's got the features you like, go for it. A lot of folks love them and swear by them. I don't recommend them due to the issues I've seen with them. Of course, .40 Cal Glocks have the internet reputation of blowing up. I'd bet .40cal guns of ANY design tend to KaBoom at a higher rate than any other caliber due to the very high pressure spike of the .40 round. I shoot 9mm and .45 and when I carry, it's a Glock 19 - but that's just me. Take care and good luck with your choice, Mike |
Maybe I shouldn't have used the word beater. Lets go with polymer. Something that is very reliable and light that can be carried walking long distances. Can be around alot of sand, rocks and water. Want to keep it around the $400 range so your HK USP is ruled out. I just hate carring around a nicely blued gun and feel my holster bump into a boulder or if I am setting on a sandbar and the wind picks up and then it starts raining on me.

I've owned both. I found the grip shape of the Glock to be uncomfortable, even painful, in my hands shooting anything larger than 9mm. I have three XDs currently and only two 9mm Glocks. I find the XD more comfortable to shoot in .40 and .45. You will probably want to have the metal hardchromed or polymer coated; the biggest complaint I have about the XDs is that they rust quickly in moist environment when they are actually being used. If you can coat it with oil or Eezox and just leave it in the holster, it will be OK. |

I've owned and carried both and XD's are my choice (3 so far). The old ones had some finish issues but Springfield took care of fixing that. The gun looks better now than when new. Either way, I don't think you can go wrong. Pick the one that fits you best. I have small hands and the XD grip is easier for me to hold and get a better placement on the trigger. I like the metal mags and they drop much easier than any glock I've owned. The grip angle is more natural for me as well. |

Own three of one, two of the other. The XD is shaped more like the inside of most hands but the Glock has a better trigger, IMO. The “Compact” Glocks like the G23 are going to be smaller and more comfortable IWB, and is probably a perfect size for a concealment gun. The newer XDs seem to have a better finish, there is a difference between the two I have. The Glocks have spare parts available, XDs do not. Other than the grip frame that feels like it was prototyped with a block of wood instead of a piece of clay, there is not much to not like about the Glock but the XD is also a good gun. Just to stir the pot the M&P might also be worth considering. But in summary, my current G23 is probably the fourth or fifth G19/23 I have owned, and when I bought this one I promised myself I would not ever sell or trade it, no matter what I was horny for! |
| Glock, Glock Glock! I do like to saftey features of the XD but Glocks finish is better. Also you can find any Glock part you want fast. Glocks are very easy to take apart completely (not just field stripping). I'll tell you one story: I took a buddy from work to buy his first hand gun. He went with the XD, against my advise, and when we got back to his house to get the gun out he scratched the finish with the lock that comes with the gun. I did not want to piss him off but I pulled my G19 out and took my knife out. I rubbed the knife up and down the slide of my Glock. NO SCRATCH MARK AT ALL. |

I'd say that if you were looking at getting a polymer pistol other than a Glock, I'd steer you toward a Smith & Wesson M&P. I own polymer framed pistols made by Glock, H&K, S&W, and Taurus. Of those... The Smith is my favorite. I'm sure the XD's are decent pistols but I don't care for grip safeties, I don't care for the all-around look of the XD series, and most importantly.... I can't get past the fact that a pistol bearing the "Springfield Armory" logo says made in Croatia on it. h... Of the two choices listed, I'd go with the Glock. If you want something different, the M&P is the new hotness IMHO. And YMMV. |

I've owned 3 XD's in the pat.I own none now. I really wanted to like the line, and I thought i'd switch over to it from the Glock system. Turned out, the finish sucked (they've changed it since), I was slightly less accurate with it(my fault I suppose), and most importantly, I could conceal a Glock 19 better than an XDSC. While I consider the XD to be a proven line, there's no question the Glock is proven. Also, the Glock has wayyyy more aftermarket parts & options, cheaper mags etc. |
| I one both, a glock 10mm and a XD9 V10 (ported) I also have a xd40. The guns are very similar. THe XD's fit my hand better and I seem to shoot them better. The only issue ive had is with the xd9 ported model. Just the other day after i finished shooting, I notice a small crack in the slide right behind the front sight. I did some research on www.xdtalk.com and others have had this same problem. The gun has 1500 rounds through it. Springfield told me to pick what gun I would like to replace it with and they will replace it. SO i would stay away from the ported model. Other than that i lean toward the XD's due to personal preference. |

I have more than a few of both, but give the slight edge to the Glock as a "beater" gun. It requires less maintenance (due to the better finish and slightly less lube requirements because the rails are much smaller), and if you have to maintain it an ape could do it and find the parts. Put steel night sights on it and you have addressed its only weakness as compared to the XD. Get a Glock. |
![]() I'm finding that really hard to believe, XD mags are some of the smoothest I have seen. They also have very stout springs. Even if they did bind up with crud, they would certainly not do so any easier than any other mag on the market. |
Glocks and XDs now have a virtually identical finish. ETA: If the ergonomics are a draw with you in .40 I would probably choose a glock simply due to their higher capacity. .40 XD's only hold 12 rounds. But either should be identical reliability wise. I used to own a .40 and now own a .45, and have never had a jam with either. |
I've never cleaned my XD mags, with thousands of rounds shot through them, and have never had a malfunction. The XD mags are well-made and reliable. They drop free, too. |
Um...why did you need to send a gun back when it was the user that caused the error? Couldn't you try to get the user to correct his problem first before sending it back? |

XD magazines are very reliable as are the XDs themselves. The magazines drop easily and insert easily. Alot of people have an "issue" with grip safties but they can be a difference when reholstering and provide a safety that is taken off as soon as you grip the pistol and to me is not a problem which is also used on the most popular pistol ever, the 1911. About Croatia begin on a SA is also insignificant as SA Mil-Spec 1911s will have an Imbel stamped on the dust cover and everyone loves them for as they are or as a base for custom builds. So far I've owned an SA Mil-Spec 1911, XD Tactical 9mm and an XD Sub-Compact 9mm , all 3 being 100% reliable with any type of ammo. The XDs also have a more natural grip angle which most people perfer unless you've been shooing Glocks for most of your life. When I hold a Glock the front sight is to high when brought up to eye level. I have heard and read about Glock owners trying out an XD and their shooting improves and a good amount of time they buy an XD and evetual sell their Glock. (Sorry Glock owners, its true. )

IMO, the Austrian is better than the Croatian on all levels. Both are good, the Glock has more going for it. Cheaper mags Lower bore axis Less "safeties" and indicators More parts, holsters etc available for it Much longer track record Better looking than the XD In the end, choose what you like...they are both good.
No, it isn't always the case. Probably not even most of the time. I shoot only Glocks and 1911's and NO ISSUES with the grip angle. Sounds like most need more range time, no offense to anyone. |
