I have .40 S&W sigma for about two years now.  I took it to the range about two weeks ago and didn't clean it as soon as I got home. A few days later I go to clean it and there is some rust on the slide. Not a bunch, but enough to get noticed. The rust is faint and freckled like.  I cleaned it and the rust is still there. I oiled heavy and put it away until now. It's a Stainless Steel Slide with Matte Finish on Slide for Reduced Glare. Is their any way to get the rust off? I would like to do it without removing the finish.

Thanks.

Not really, steel wool will work will work , but may damage your finish slightly.  Use the finest grade you can get.  Other than that, you might consider bead blasting the rust off, which will produce a matte finish when done.

Is their no type of cleaning solvents/oils or something that might take it out?

You might try Naval Jelly.

Supposedly you shouldn’t use regular steel wool on a stainless firearm since particles of the steel wool will become embedded in the steel and will later rust, making things look even worse.

Brownells sells a bronze wool for this purpose.

That, a light oil, and some gentle rubbing should clean things up fairly decently.

Supposedly you can also use a copper scouring pad like you get at Wal-Mart for cleaning kitchen pans for this purpose – though I’d be real careful about scratching anything up.

Any bronze or copper marks should clean up with a copper-removing gun solvent.   Just don’t soak the firearm too long since the solvent might discolor it.

I’ve also heard of folks using Flitz with success, but I’ve never tried it.

I've used bronze brushes with WD-40 and CLP to good success, also steel wool, although I haven't heard about the particles getting stuck in the metal and rusting later, never had that happen to me... even with the bunches of guns that I used to clean at the indoor gun range.  Flitz also works to polish the metal and remove rust, but be careful that you aren't going to dig out rust and leave pitting.  It doesn't sound like you are at that point yet, so you should be good to go...

Might try an oil called Corrosion X. I just love this stuff.  It will not harm your finish and it might get the rust off.  It is a really slick lubricant also.  It is slicker than Teflon lubes.

Is it slicker 'en deer guts on a door knob?

Whatever you use (bronze brush/solvent), take your time and apply gentle pressure. This will protect the finish while still cleaning the rust.

I did this to a friends SS Beretta 92 that I'm taking care of. The rust came off and the finish looks good as new.

listen the best thing ever on any stainless steel gun is FLITZ.....rub it on and rub it off....rust goes bye bye.....go to your local gun shop I bet they carry some......does the gun actually have a finish? or is it just stainless.....I mean I had a khar pm9 that got a little rusty I put the flitz on and took care of the problem....but if there is a actual finish over the stainless it may take it off

this is what I have the paste and it is the best thing I have ever used....put a little on anything stainless with rust and away it goes

check out the products   good luck

mat stainless is the worst for getting rust.  That bead/sand blasted surface creates all these nice micro pits for rust to "seed."  treat it a if it were bare white metal and you'll be okay.  Don't let exisiting rust sit as it acts like it's own catalyst (like a cancer) and will only get worse.  best thing would be to have it re-finished so you won't have to worry about it again.  I would recommed the KG gunkote product line if you plan on doing it yourself.  If you don't have an airbrush, Brownell's has it in a spray can.  Check out the ARFcom refinishing forum for more info.

S&W refinished the slide for free because of warranty, and I never even registered my warranty because of personal issues. Great company; I will be buying more products from them.

Naval jelly worked great for removing the surface rust on my classic car....why not on our classic guns?

I've used stainless steel wool on blued guns and managed to not fuck them up.Soaking it in CLP and using a brush would be my first option.Flitz would be my second option.Stainless steel wool would be third.Last would be bead blasting if all those fail.
