I just shot a full size kimber model 1911 and I think I want one, but not sure which brand to go with. I am thinking about the springfield, smith & wesson, or kimber and like to keep it under $800.

I own a couple Kimbers (Custom II and Eclipse) and two Springfields (Loaded and Champion) and absolutely love all four of them and they can all be had for under $800.  If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the full-sized Springfield.

I will probably be the only one to say it, but I love my Smith 1911.  None of the usual problems with it.  Great shooter...  $679 2 years ago.  Not sure what they are now.

The S&W 1911PD (scandium frame) is pretty nice for around $800.

Kimber, Colt, SW, SA...in that order, depending on model and price

I like my SA Loaded model.  It's a shooter!

But you'll be fine with any of the recommended 1911's given above.

For under $450 I would suggest a Norinco. They are solid steel and built to colt spec. They are also one of the few firearms that Wilson combat will work on.

For under $700 I would go with the Springfield Loaded. It is made with many of the custom  add-ons found in/on $1500+ guns (Ex. Adjustable trigger, beaver tail, ambidextrous safety, Novak sights, etc.)

For under $1000 I would tend to drift more towards a nice Kimber. In many eyes, they have become the stand for custom 1911s.

Kimber or SAI.

I've been real happy with both my SAIs.

Take a look at the Taurus PT1911.  For the money it's a great deal.

You just can't beat the Taurus PT1911 for the money.  I don't think you could beat it for double the money.  I paid $480 for mine and I'm going to get another.  They have a full length guide rod, ambi-safety, extended mag release, contoured grips, polished feed ramp, Heinie sights, trigger job, full beaver tail, etc, etc, etc.  The list just goes on and on.  If you bought a Springfield GI 1911 you would spend more initially on the gun, then another $1000 getting it up to par with the PT1911.  Did I mention I love mine?  Google it and read the reviews for yourself.

You do realize that firearms technology has advanced since 1911, right?

You do realize that even with all that advancement, there's nothing any of those new plastic guns do that a good 1911 doesn't do better?

I like Kimber (have owned 2, still own one) but they are in no way shape or form "custom"

Most are going for over $500. I handled one and honestly wasn't impressed. It may have "custom" touches but they aren't fitted like on custom guns, or like even on Springers, Colts or Kimbers. I'd take a used Kimber for $550 over a new Taurus for the same price any day.
My advice would be to get a nice Colt, That's what I'd do.
