my brothers looking for a pistol he knows what braned he wants but he cant decide the caliber. he needs it for home protection, range, and defense against bad animals while hiking/hunting.
now do you think a 9mm with the right ammo is suitable for defense against these animals such as mountain lions and bears? or would the 40 cal be more suitable? i am asking about these rounds because he still does not want to spend a arm and leg on ammo.

Bears and mountain lions?

Neither of those will work, so go 9mm. Cheaper.

why would either one of these rounds work? they both have good penetration and with good hollowpoints shouldnt it work? i mean not saying your wrong but i know a guy who has taken a white tail with a 40cal. one shot.

Both would probibly work against the lion but not a bear. For a large bear you want a rifle in 45-70 or larger.

to fit all those needs in a auto, i'd opt for a 10mm--probably the G20 (hi-cap, easy to fix own)

if not, a revolver is in order--either in .357mag or .44mag (or larger if its mostly for wild animals)

use JHPs for peoples; i'd probably opt for FMJs or solid leads for bears--you will need the penetration

FWIW: taking down deer is one thing, but taking down 150-200lb+ bears/Mnt lions that are pissed off is another....not to mention they have thicker fur and skulls

oh well yeah we carry our rifles i usually carry my 300win mag. but i wanted to know if this would work in case we wanted to go on a walk without a rifle or a heavy revolver.we usually see medium sized black bears no grizzlys or nothin. just the trusty g22 my brothers thinking of getting one so im trying to help him decide on wich caliber glock to get.

It depends on the bear.

Black bears, you can probably get away with something like a .40 or a .45.

Any other type of bear (Brown, Grizzly, Polar), and you're suicidal to even attempt using anything less that a .44 mag.  Personally, I wouldn't even fully trust one of those.  .454 or .500 is better.

Mountain Lions can be killed with anything that'll kill people.  9mm and .40 should work.

9mm is cheaper, but I'd still take the .40 if you're trying to fend off black bears and mountain lions.  Personally, I wouldn't try anything less than 10mm, and if I had one, I'd take a .44 mag or better.

.45 ACP, no question...

...until he has more money to buy a more appropriate bear/lion defense weapon.

What's better for big bears?
.460 mag. It will shoot the .460, 454 Casull, AND .45 Colt

oh me and my brother have numerous revolvers .  so hows thet recoil on the 10mm is it also suitable for home defense? or does it kick likea mule. id imagine its alot more than my g22.

I would think your chances of running into "bad people" would be greater than running into "bad animals". For that alone, i personally would opt for a handgun in .40 caliber.

A 9mm is not appropritate for either. Mountain lions can run 150 lbs and over, and bears have thick skins/fat layers. Most police depts have abandoned the 9mm because it takes numerous shots to stop  a human. Different rounds are needed for potentially dangerous game, where you want deep pentetration, and home defense, where you don't. Unless he reloads and wants to load a stout .44 mag for the trail, and a mild one for home, would recommend a 12 ga., bird shot for home, and slugs for the trail.

I can say that bears don't like Glocks.

Those pointy edges hurt on the way out.
:)

Carry the "heavy" revolver...  As long as it is a .44 Mag or stronger...  Maybe a long .357 or .41, if it's all you've got.
