| Hi all , I just picked up a P1 for $298 out the door at Gander Mtn. Does anyone know anything about the quality and reliability of these pistols ? It came with the cleaning kit , 2 mags , and leather holster . maxx |
You could have saved yourself some money and went to AIM surplus(since you live in Ohio). They have them for $239. I bought one and it looks brand new. I really like mine. You can't go wrong with a Walther. |

It was the standard service pistol of the West German Army and several other NATO nations, like Spain for a while. Mostly outdated and being replaced, but they seem to be serviceable enough. I have one and it works fine. I could think of better guns to have in combat nowdays, but it would still do the job. Mine feeds ball fine, haven't tried it with HPs. Most of the pistols from that era do fine with ball, but are finicky with HPs. Not as sexy (and probably not as tough) as a Sig or HK, but the 9mm bullets come out the end just the same. |

I've owned and still do a few P1's. They are exceptionally reliable with FMJ bullets. Some have luck with JHP, but do not shoot +P under any circumstances!! I recommend changing out the recoil springs (dual) since no telling how old the originals are that came with firearm. If you shop around the net you can usually find ORIGINAL Walther P1/P38 magazines (new & used) at a reasonable price. They are a quality and fun pistol to shoot with a little history behind them. I have so much faith in my P1's that I have one stashed in the kitchen condition 3 just in case...... Never have had a FTF, FTE or any problems with any of them with the proper ammo. www.p38forum.com/ www.cdnninvestments.com/wap39mmmagne.html |
| I bought mine from a local gun store. It's a post-war P38, but it's basically the same as yours. Manufactured 12/59, I don't think it had ever been fired, as the recoil springs were so strong I had to shoot +P's for the first hundred rounds to avoid short-stroking. After that it shoots everything I throw at it, including hollow-points and flat-nosed frangible rounds with no problems. Lots of muzzle-flip, but otherwise a great pistol. |
| It's time for a range report . It is a blast to shoot . I got 4in. groups of 5 shots at 10 yards . Considering that I'm not a very good shooter , that was good enough for me . If I put it in competent hands , who knows what it would do . On to fit and finish , this thing is gorgeous , very tight fit and is so easy to field strip . If I had gone to AIM surplus , I would have spent at least $40 in gas , enough to make up the difference in price . Overall , it was one of my best firearm purchases to date . maxx |

Good guns. Have owned one for three or four years. DA trigger pull is pretty stiff but I think that is the nature of the beast. Single is acceptable if a bit mushy. Reliability and accuracy have been good. Haven't tried HP's, doubt I ever will. Mine is a July 77 edition. Has the hex bolt and fat slide. Had seen some but very little use. Have the arsenal check slip still in the box. One of the better values on the market right now. |

Laserlips, I fondled one of those BMs at a local gunshop and am still kicking myself. They're sweethearts. |
