I picked up an old Colt Police Positive a couple years ago for $250...

It has the original black grips made of ? with the thumbrest. It was made in 1934, has the firing pin on the hammer, and was issued to a police department in oklahoma or jkentucky im not sure which he told me.(It has the issue number stamped into the bottom of the grip)

Has what I would say 85-90% blueing only worn at the high points on the cylinder and bbl. The ejector rod is straight and smooth (no housing). has seen very few rounds not even having a full cylinder ring. There are burn marks in the chambers but I think I could get them out with  a brush.

It shoots about 5-6" groups at 15 yds in DA, and 4" groups in SA offhand. It has a stiff trigger but It has seen little use so it might get better? The cylinder has play until you pull the trigger then It locks up good and tight. Isnt banged up and has matching numbers all the way through.

Any help?,

First, is this a Police Positive or a Police Positive Special?

Colt didn't use black grips with a thumb rest.
The old original grips were black "Gutta Percha" rubber with molded-in checkering, and Colt logos at the top.  No "thumb rest".
In 1923 they started using checkered walnut with silver Colt medallions, so the grips have been replaced with something else.

Value depends on when it was made, and the actual condition.

Here's a site to check the date made:
proofhouse.com/colt/

Note that Colt used different serial number ranges for the Police Positive .32, the Police Positive .38, and the Police Positive Special.  The PP .38 was chambered in low power rounds like the old .38 S&W, and the frame and cylinder are shorter than the PPS that was chambered in .38 Special.

Based on your info, I'd say the gun is worth about what you payed for it.

The grips are colt grips (They have the colt symbol on the right one and the left one has the thumb rest) and I was told by the seller they are original but I dont know how much he knew. It is as you said hard rubber with checkering. It was a police issue. It only has Police Positive (with one p for both words) a dash then .38 special. Proofhouse does not have a PPS with my serial number range (367***) so im guessing it just a PP in .38 special. Thanks for the information!

Thanks,

I'd say your gun is still in the $250-300 range, IMO.

I have virtually the same gun, nice little shooter.
